Biblical Criticism (World Behind the Text) - 2

This story of the two Blind men was written by Matthew, who is an author in the bible that wrote about Jesus' life since he was born. This story begins in city of Jericho; located near Israel, just to the North of The Dead Sea. During the time of which this text was created, having good health was seen as a reward for ‘right living/living by the rules and values of God’, however having an illness, such as blindness, was viewed as a punishment for your wrong. In addition, the people of this time thought and believed that you could be healed through the touch of Jesus hence why the audience understood that for Jesus to touch a person they would be immediately healed. Due to Jesus social status, for him to stop and help and inferior (in this case the blind person) was considered interesting for the public as most people would have been ignored because they were outcasts from society. As well as, they had got what they deserved because they had sinned against what was expected of them. In this story, Jesus goes against the general attitude and stops and asks them “What do you want me to do for you?", demonstrating the level of compassion he has towards his people. The blind men which were outcasts in society due to their illness, lead them to being viewed as sinners which explain why the crowd demanded them to be quiet when they called out to Jesus ("The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet”). However, Jesus went against the crowed, and listens; showing compassion towards them and as result heals them. After being touched, they stand up and follow Jesus which is a sign that they have been accepted back into the society.

Catherine McCauley was Born September 29th 1787 in Dublin, Ireland and passed away on November 11th 1814. During Catherine's early childhood, both her parents passed away leaving her and her brother to go and live with family relatives who didn't approve of her religion, yet they supported her mission and kept her Catholicity a priority. When Catherine had time to help, she would teach needlework and sewing to the young girls in her community that had poor lifestyles. This made her feel the need to do something, hence why she leased a property in Dublin and would use it to create a school for Girls. On December 12th 1831, Catherine McAuley alongside Mary Ann Dole and Mary Elizabeth Harley professed their religious vows as the first sisters of Mercy, beginning their congregation.

This passage is about Jesus who uses his power to heal two men of their blindness, considered a miracle story. On day, Jesus and his disciples were walking down the road with a group of people shortly following behind him. On the side of the road, were sitting two blind men who were shouting at him, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!". This resulted in the crowd of people telling the two men to be quiet, expecting Jesus to agree walk past them however, Jesus calls back to the men and asks them what they wish for him to do. They tell Jesus that they want their sight back so Jesus touched their eyes because he felt sympathetic of them. Immediately, they were healed.

In Catherines village, there were two women who were severely deprived of basic human rights; these can be related to the two blind men in the miracle story. Catherine gave these women back their dignity by letting them stay in her House of Mercy which majorly relates to when Jesus cured the men of their blindness.

This story inspired Catherine to help people who are in desperation of need, no matter whether they were inferior to her. Throughout the Miracle Story, Jesus used his power for the better of those around him rather than for himself. This demonstrates the amount of compassion they have to help those around them. Catherine had the same choice to spend the money she inherited on self-serving items, yet she chose to use it to establish the House of Mercy and help the less fortunate in their lifetime.

Catherine's Prophetic, Kingly and Priestly - 6

Throughout Catherine McCauley life, she regularly participated in the Prophetic, Kingly and Priestly work of Christ by how she spoke and acted for the dignity and freedom of those less fortunate than her. She believed that every individual was equal and used this to empower her to make the world a better place for the needy. As Catherine’s dad died when she was young, his compassion influenced her entire life while her mum taught her independence, pride and charm. Catherine was a caring woman who felt a strong calling to devote her life to the service of the poor, the sick and the uneducated. She fully pledged her goal of opening a mercy centre and after many years of hard work she had established 14 houses.

Prophetic – Catherine embraced the prophetic role by using her power speak out against the injustice for women. During this time, women were treated really poorly, and often when in an argument with their partner; they are left homeless. Catherine made it her job to give them a place to feel stay comfortably. She also wrote about how this was unfair and that the issue need to be addressed and changed. Being the kind woman, she was, Catherine gave small jobs in the house of mercy to children.

Kingly – Catherine McCauley used her power to spread the word of God and the Catholic Church, across a large amount of people. In addition, many of the children who lived in the House of Mercy were brought up into the Catholic Faith.

Priestly – Catherine demonstrated a priestly role by devoting her life to helping those who were less fortunate than her. Throughout her life, she made many sacrifices which included donating money to others and giving up her free time to help the needy. Catherine McCauley was very selfless and is considered to be similar to a priest as she dedicated her life for the better of others.

The Rerum Novarem inspired my chosen reformer; Catherine to assist those in need of financial support. This meant, she gave them a chance to have a job and a place to stay. Throughout Catherine’s life, she shared her caring selfless and religious life to those who needed who needed. “So that they who contribute so largely to the advantage of the community may themselves share in the benefits which they create-that being housed, clothed, and bodily fit, they may find their life less hard and more endurable" (Rerum Novarum). Although this is what was stated in the letter, she didn’t do these deeds to benefit herself; she did it to help the poor, homeless and educated women. Throughout the Rerum Novarum, its consists of 7 principles – many that Catherine responded to positively however two specific writing relate back to her life. Protection of the poor, this section discusses the classes and levels of the rich and poor and reflects the actions Catherine made throughout her life especially when she put all of her own earnings into improving the lives of others rather than herself. She was never asked to help the needy yet dedicated her entire life to working with the poor, homeless and uneducated women; developing society into a peaceful, religious and respectful environment. When someone’s rights and beliefs are in question, Catherine was quick to defend especially when it was the rights of women and the poor. For example, Women who were once living on the streets, were given the chance to stay at the House of Mercy by Catherine.
