I like the ideas of students choosing their own words - but it can become a lot to manage. One way I have gotten around this is that I will select 10 - 15 words and have students rate their comfort level with these words. This way they know which words they need to focus on and which ones they already know pretty well. It also helps to weed out any misconceptions with multiple meaning words or words that sound similar. I teach AG so I feel comfortable quizzing my students on the whole list at the end of the unit...but another option would be to then make individualized assessments. In the event that a students did truly know ALL of the words, he/she could be challenged to find their own words OR come up with higher level synonyms for the words the rest of the group is using.
