Dred Scott vs Sanford was a landmark case. This is only one of two times where the Supreme Court ruled that a law made by Congress was unconstitutional. Scott was suing his owner's widow for his freedom. He claimed that he should be free because his owner took him to free states such as Iowa and Wisconsin. He lost the case, because the Supreme Court ruled that slaves were property, and they could not interfere with property.
