Lay Me Down by Sam Smith ft. John Legend

Although Sam Smith and John Legend are not my favorite artists, during the timbre section of this lesson I immediately thought of this song because of how powerful the vocals are on top of the instrumentals. The artists do a great job creating a strong, breathy and full tone color together.

I thought the idea of timbre and that different instruments have their own shade of color. Although this song is not quite as night and day as the example, I thought of forget me too by MGK featuring Halsey. Both artists provide a tone more on the raspier side, however MGK stays deeper and sharper and Halsey maintains still a sweetness in her voice while still raspy and has more of a cleaner element of hitting her notes. I think the contrast between them works well when they sing the same parts separately and especially when they sing together.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gVNNPv8w4Q

If there were to be no uniqueness in music, music would be much less meaningful to music creators and music listeners. Timbre is so important in music because it is the way people distinct different instruments and different composers.

Lorde's voice is so specific to her sound and the emotion that she puts into her music. In Liability, she is confessing how she feels like she is a liability to those around and that she's better off alone. This is obviously a very sad and vulnerable theme for a song. While timbre and emotion aren't synonymous, she makes the timbre compliment the emotion of the song to enhance her message. The instrumental and her voice is piano throughout the song and her timbre is very raspy, breathy, and smoky. It sounds like she's whispering her depressing confessions to the listener.

A main observation I made in this section is the correct way to identity timbre. Before it seemed to be a more abstract concept harder to define. Although it is still abstract in a sense, the use of adjectives to seems to be a strong way of defining it. I think many people do get it confused and use words that relate to emotion which is not the same because it has to do with the quality of the sound.

It's a song about knowing you've lost someone that you know was good for you. The unique guitar throughout this song leads me to believe that this song has an instrument pitch. The way the guitar begins it gives me a mellow HEALING vibe.

My time in choir I always just looked at them as notes and not a way of reading. Which these videos showed me that there is a difference between the way they use the beats and how they use a rhythm. Most rhythms are affected by a metronome and you work on the beat and can change your tone and pace throughout. Where as beat is the background and aesthetic behind the actual people singing.

This is one of my favorite songs in terms of Phil Collins' vocals. Throughout the song he maintains a soft and soothing timbre in his voice. There's a slight shift in timbre between the verses and choruses, however. In the verses, Phil's voice is soothing and gentle, and while his voice doesn't necessarily get aggressive in the chorus, there's an extra kick of strength that comes through that makes it less soothing and more driving, while still being relatively calm.
