Creative Reflection 1 - Synchronicity.

As part of our creative and reflective class we had to engage in a group activity of four and each throw a ball the person in our group, changing direction as we progressed. This sounds like a relatively easy task, however, as we soon learned it was far from this and soon developed into something from circus performance. We all had different techniques and abilities in how we communicated with one another, and it was clear we needed to implement a stragegy if we were going to be able to complete the activity successfully. Through trial and error, clear communication both verbally and non-verbally we were beginning to find a rhythm and even started to enjoy the process. On reflection, although we did not create a masterpiece which we could hang on the wall for everyone to gauze over in amazment, I did feel that we had forged something quite special through our calloboration with eachother and the strenghtening of the group dynamics. I not only learned the importance of team work and the process of working effectively in partner-ship with service users and colleagues, I also on a personal level, gained a valuable insight into my own attempt of trying to juggle a number of things at the same time. From this I have learned to not expect things to happen instantaneously, however, I can achieve my goals by working through them, step-by-step. I have no plans to give up my day job and run away with the travelling circus anytime soon, however I can take from this the realisation that creativity does not have to be something only creative people can achieve but is an art of being able to generate new ideas and share them with those around us.

Creative reflection 2 - Hand Co-ordination

Our creative class was designed for young people with intellectual disabilities, with a focus on hand co-ordination and the engagment of fine motor skills and how we respond to colour, shape and form. We cut out the outline of our hands and we were asked to write down all the possible movements our hands can make. Hand co-ordination challenges, in particular require a different approach when working with individuals with a intellectual disability. It is essential to understand their specific limitations and find alternative ways to help them accomplish tasks. This may involve breaking down complex actions into smaller, more manageable steps. By adapting their needs, we can empower them to navigate daily activities more independently. One aspect of creativity that stands out to me is it's ability to break down barriers and facilitate communication. Many individuals in social care settings may struggle to express themselves verbally. Creativity, whether through art, music or dance, can provide an alternative means of communication. This can promote a deeper understanding between the service user and practitioner to enable them to implement more effective supports and interventions. By incorporating creativity into my practice, I hope to enhance the lives of the individuals I will be working with and contribute to a more inclusive and empowering social care system.

Creative Reflection 3 - Five Elements of Nature

Week four of our creative and reflective class, we were asked to step outside and engage our senses with different elements of nature that surrounds us. Nature and creativety are very much intertwined, as both offer endless inspiration and stimulation for the body and mind. The sights, sounds, smells, and textures of nature engage our senses and ignite our imagination, allowing our creativity to flourish. In social care, providing services users with outdoor activities can have a positive impact on their both their physical and mental well-being. Going for walks in the park, gardening, or simply sitting out in nature can help reduce stress and improve mood. It also provides for the opportunity for social interaction and a change of environment. Engaging the senses through naturecan be benefical for individuals with sensory issues or cognitive decline. Through my explration of the senses in nature i have learned that incorporating nature and creativity into social care work can enhancethe well-being of service users bt providing opputunities for relaxation, self-expression, social interaction, and cognitive stimulation. This approach I feel would work well across all social care settings, supporting chrildren right through to elderly care needs. Through my engagment with the module material, I have come to realise that creativity is not limited to artistic expression, but rather, it can be a powerful tool for fostering positive change, personal growth, and overall well-being not just for the service users I will be working with but also for me as a practitioner.

Traces Dance Emsemble - Waterford

Having watched the short video on the work which is being carried out by the Traces Dance Ensemble, based in Waterford, I could not help but feel uplifted by their genuine enthusiasm and ability to find joy in their dancing roles. These young dancers are provided with a safe space where they are free to express themselves without the challenges or barriers they may encounter in their everyday lives. In practice, working with these young people must be so rewarding and fulfilling, to be able to witness their progress, achievements, and growth. In order to build trust and a rapport that is evidently in place in this project the young are treated with dignity, respect and equality, in a non-discriminatory environment, ensuring their human rights are upheld. This approach in practice creates inclusion and prevents individuals from being marginalised from their communities and society. Respecting the beliefs and values of the young dancers and their families in a culturally sensitive environment, ensures their unique identities are addresses and the supports and services are tailored to their own specific needs. This service empowers young people to become active members in their society by focusing on their ability rather than what they are not able to do. The new addition of the younger members of the dance group is a further commitment in implementing access to services for everyone regardless of their age.

During our interprofessional practice week in college, I had the honour to be able to watch a live performance by these talented young dancers. To say the confidence and energy that was expressed on stage had a profound effect on their captivated audience, would be an understatement. Their joy and happiness that emanated from the stage was infectious. It was clear to see the hard work and commitment they had put into their performance, despite of their disability. For me, it was a reminder of the incredible strength and talent that resides in every individual, regardless or their ability. By creating this environment in practice for those with a disability we can not only highlight their talents and personal strengths, but also encourage them to further explore new ides and show them they are as valuable in society, like everyone else. The idea that these young people have a space where they can express themselves freely, along with their peers, promotes independence, social connections and empowers them to overcome challenges together.

Dancing is a universal language that removes barriers, and the joy and emotion felt while watching their performance was truly something special. I am proud to be able to say that I will soon be part of a community of professionals that can make such a positive and lasting effective on those who are vulnerable in society, and be able to contribute to making a change, to their needs, challenges and aspirations.

To promote the amazing work being carried out by the young dancers, co-ordinators and choreographers at Traces Dance Ensemble, I created a poster which I feel represents the safe place where the young people with a disability can express themselves through creativity and movement. My poster aims to encourage other young people who are considering joining a dance group, to come on board, and be active members in their community.
