Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist and social activist who rescued over 70 slaves using the underground railroad. Growing up enslaved, she knew the pain other enslaved people had to live through. Putting herself in danger and freeing slaves is truly admirable. She even worked as a cook and a nurse for the Union Army when the Civil War began. She is truly one of the faces of the Underground Railroad movement, which would eventually evolve into the Civil Rights movement.

The theme I decided to tie this picture to was change. Not change in a physical way, but more psychological and mental change. While serving in the Civil War, Logan experienced a change of heart. He switched his stance on blacks and slavery, and went from supporting fugitive slave laws to supporting African American rights. The change in my opinion, was for the better, and the statue serves as a beacon of hope. Hope that people can change and learn to love people as they would love themselves.

This is a Rubik’s cube. Specifically, it is my 3x3x3 Rubik’s cube. It is a puzzle that is solved by turning sides of the cube in order to make each side one uniform color. The puzzle may not seem too complex, but it was quite a hard puzzle to create. It took its creator, Erno Rubik a month to solve it. The problem Rubik faced was the problem of moving the parts independently without the entire cube falling apart. Like the cube, we all have many aspects of our life that clash together and are on the verge of falling apart. The cube represents different stages of our lives. The scramble, the turns, and the solved cube. While solving the cube, you must keep track of certain edge or corner pieces, using algorithms to align them perfectly. Keeping track can be as simple as making one right turn. Even if the cube gets scrambled again, it can always be solved.

This was before the class started, but I could not resist using it for this class. Many times in our class we have had to trust the process. We must take notes outside of class, discuss in class and take notes on what we learned afterward. The process may be ugly sometimes, but we come out of it with new knowledge. This egg took me a while to make, and I had no way of making a stencil, so I used stickers that I ripped up to make the shape before dying it. The process was brutal, but I gained an experience and was pleased with the outcome.

This is a very simple one. Plants need water, sunlight and affection to grow. Humans need those things too. Specifically the people in our country, all experience growth. Through time there are different trends that happen in our country that make it so diverse and so interesting to learn about it. Like Hubert here, we all grow, and our country has grown, but whether or not it is for better or for worse is for each individual to decide.

This was a garage sale I partook in. We had to keep track of everything’s prices, where they were placed and when they sold. We also had to keep track of people who came in. There was a whole lot of keeping track that went into keeping the whole ordeal nice, tidy and smooth. This is the most ‘keeping track’ thing I could possibly think of.

The one on the left is Hümber, a small chicken stuffed animal I picked up in chinatown. The one on the right is Eugeo, a stuffed animal I got for my roommate. Bonds are very important in our society. Bonds within people, within societies, countries. A lot of the events we have learned about in class have been about broken bonds. I want to focus on the bonds that are still tethered together, specifically the bonds in All That She Carried. She book is about a woman seeking to find out more about her ancestry and restore the generational bonds that have been lost.

I found this on the side of the street when hanging out with my little brother. I thought it was neat and so I took a picture of it. It is a small part of the entire car, but it represents the car entirely. This reminded me of the videos of the riots and people hitting other people with cars because of a disagreement. Those people showed how one part of a whole can make it look bad. This mercury emblem makes the car its on a mercury, just like the people who do things for a cause represent that cause.

This random sticker can be found on whatever contraption these are in front of the Wabash entrance to our wonderful university. The characters on it are from a video game I believe. The sticker says “everybody likes you”. It could be satirical for all I know, but I thought it was neat so I got a picture of it. The impact of the sticker may be small, but it's there nonetheless. It still got my attention and caused me to use it for this project. I can relate this to a lot of the untold stories of the Civil War we’ve learned about during class and the impact they’ve had on future generations.

This is the tree that was put up in the lunchroom/cafeteria. There was a bowl upon entering the area with little turkey shaped pieces of paper, along with other thanksgiving esque shaped papers. You could write down what you are thankful for, and if you were fortunate or timely enough, they put it up on the tree you see before you. The sense of community has taken a physical form and is quite pretty. Community is important in any setting, because it creates a sense of integrity and togetherness.
