As I read the pdf file titled “What is Information Literacy - Common Sense Education," I thought about why information literacy is important and how it applies to teaching and learning. According to the pdf, Information literacy skills such as identifying, finding, evaluating, and using information effectively are important and should be taught in the classroom for the following three reasons:

*Helps students learn effective techniques for evaluating the quality and credibility of websites.

*Helps students think critically about the intentions of commercial websites and advertising.

*Helps students apply different search strategies to increase the accuracy and relevance of online search results.

The pdf further states, "As a teacher, you can help your students develop strategies for uncovering accurate, relevant, and quality information — whether conducting online research for school projects or exploring their personal interests.”

Overall, students need to be proficient in information literacy skills in order to be successful in today’s society.

Resource: Information Literacy - Common Sense Education.pdf

The Big6 can be thought of as information literacy. It is a six-step information problem-solving process focusing on critical thinking to create a product. It includes defining a task, information seeking strategies, locating sources and finding information within sources, using the information, synthesizing, and evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of the process and product. According to The Big6 article, “The Big6 works anywhere-the classroom, workplace, or at home. Moreover, it works across content areas and aligns easily with state and national learning standards.”

The Super 3 has the same concept, but is written for younger students. It is a three-step process. The Super3 includes planning (task definition and information seeking strategies), doing (location and access, use of information, and synthesis), and reviewing (evaluation). The process involves a beginning, middle, and end.

According to Mike Eisenberg, teachers should implement the Super 3 model to try to get younger students with the thinking process.

Both the Big6 and the Super3 are research models that help students develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Resources: The Big6 article. Retrieved from https://thebig6.org/
Mike Eisenberg Vodcast#1-What is Information Literacy?(YouTube video)

Since I work with primary grades in the resource room, I would start by using the Super3 to teach research skills. I would definitely start in the school library and model, model, model how to research. First, I would pick a real life subject and try to relate it to how it can be applied in a work environment. For example - careers. Then I would pose a question using an organizer such as a circle map - “What Do I Want to be When I Grow Up?” - (Plan). A discussion would be held about various careers based on student responses to help students develop early research skills that strengthens their information seeking.

Next, when each student has chosen a career, I would show them the process of finding the needed materials - (Do). Using the school’s online library catalog, I would model how to find books on becoming a "firefighter" so students can get an idea as to how to go about finding library materials. I would help students find books on their chosen career. To help students process the information, I would review the materials with them. I would tell them what the book is about. For example, “this book is on doctors, this book is on engineers, this book is on dancers, etc.” If students can read, I would let them read or I would go over some of the materials with the student.

Last, I would encourage the information seeking process by checking if their needs were satisfactorily met - (Review). I would make sure that the students found what they were looking for by asking questions. For example, “Is this the book you were looking for?” “Is there any other type of career books you had in mind?” etc. Then, I would have students tell what they learned about their chosen career.

Mike Eisenberg suggests starting with Super3 then transitioning to Big6. So after introducing the Super 3 process, I plan on starting the Big6 by using the terminology and labeling what we're doing at each step. Again, model, model, model!

I believe that instructing students on information literacy is an important part of the classroom. By not just showing students exactly where materials they want are located, but modeling and taking time to teach them how the process works develops research skills. Students with disabilities should utilize the library to the best of their ability. Using the Big 6 and Super3 process can help them learn valuable skills for lifelong learning.

Resources: The Big6 article. Retrieved from https://thebig6.org/
Mike Eisenberg Vodcast#1-What is Information Literacy?(YouTube video)
