Clans were significant in the organization of social affairs, and were ran by men. Social classes went by: Royals-->Priests-->Nobles--->Military Officials--->Commoners-->Slaves. Wage gap due to centralized government, which also led to social differences. Multiple ethnicities were accepted in society. Slaves were usually captured in war or they were people in debt that couldn't afford to have enough money to pay it off. Aristocratic nobles were highly favored due to their influence to guide the kings. Priests had enough power to question the king about his choices in government.

Greece had a mainly patriarchal society where men ruled the households, and owned government positions. However women were under the authority of fathers, husbands, and sons. Additionally, women couldn't own property, but could own business, such as food stalls. Greece also had slaves. They were either people who could not pay debts or prisoners of war. Physically powerful slaves did manual labor, and others were servants. In Sparta, there were helots, who were servants who provided agriculture, labor, and kept a supply of food. However, Spartan citizens were equal in status. Prowess, discipline, and military talent distincted Spartans apart.

Brahmans carried out activities such as trade and architecture. Gupta rulers were Vaishayas. The Kshatriya’s practiced industrial vocation. Sudras were involved in activities like trade and agriculture. People lived in joint families and the society was male dominating. The women were given secondary position. They were expected to obey the instructions given by the male members of the family. Women were allowed to obtain education, but were not permitted to perform sacred rituals or read sacred texts.

Hellenistic society did not significantly change from the Classical Era (more about expansion of society rather than development). Like in the Classical Era, many of the citizens lived a rural life. Most of the time, men did the outside menial tasks while women did the domestic work. Both men and women participated in commerce, although women needed guardianship from men. As with Classical Greece, slavery was a prominent feature in Hellenistic Greece. Because of Alexander's conquests of new lands, slavery spread to even more places of the Hellenistic world.
