1. Although banning the use of artificial trans fats may have a positive impact on human health, they open the door to excessive government control over food, which could restrict dietary choices, interfere with cultural, ethnic, and religious traditions. what is your take on the matter? | 2. What will be the economic impacts of banning industrial trans fat?

There will be economic impacts on the ban of trans fats however there will not be much impact. This can be looked at by the prices of salads and burgers. Burgers cost more then salads so if the manufacturers of salads reduce the prices them maybe the ban of industrial fats in not necessary as who would not pay more to live longer.

I think there should be awareness about the source of trans fats before banning them altogether. It depends whether trans fats come from plants (beneficial) or animal sources (harmful) which determine if they are good or bad. Because of most of the population’s food choices, most people get cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease and athrrosclerosis) because of the increased consumption of trans fats.

I believe that the banning of trans fat will cause unfortunately a reduction in capital gains leading to less money available for the economy therefore less money being available for the department of health. In turn, meaning less money for research and implementing other policies.

I think there should be bans on vegetable oils and the actual trans fat itself in supermarkets but not the products from companies for example biscuit and cake companies. Instead there should be interventions on cooking methods and try and get food production companies to re-evaluate how they make their products. Also there could be bans on trans fats from recipe books

Government has a dutie in protecting patients, in particularly children. 1 in 3 children now, by the time they leave high school they are obese/overweight. We need to think about our children. Therefore, I strongly believe trans fat should be banned, but as people can start over consuming other foods such as complex carbohydrates, people should be given other options and educated to stop over consuming anything . A good example of success is the banning of trans in Demark, where the decline in trans fat consumption has been one major factor in the reduction of CVD rates over ten years. (Vanusa)

As part of the SCAN (Scientific Advice Committee on Nutrition) the detrimental health affects of trans fats are clear. Yes, trans fats are what drives many producers to success as it provides several benefits for the producer and consumer such as shelf life, low cost, flavour and improves the texture of foods which customers love. By introducing a ban can potentially cause a knock on effect on the economy as finding alternatives such as healthy oils are more costly to grow and manufacture resulting in higher expenses and higher market prices.

However, the issue here is to evaluate the economic benefits the restriction will have and the positive impact of saving lives, reducing CVDs and improving health in the population which can reduce the financial burden on the NHS, potentially stabilising the economic stress the ban may initially propose.

- Sana Majeed (SCAN)
