The culture in Philippines is composed of both east and western traditions, with heavy influence from pre-colonial cultures. In terms of language, Philippines’ official languages are Filipino and English, making them an anglophone country. Nowadays, “Taglish” (Filipino & English) is becoming common amongst Filipinos as they can’t help but mix english words when they speak. On the contrary, Indonesia’s official language is Bahasa Indonesia which does not make us an anglophone country despite many english speakers. Our beliefs also differ, with majority of Filipinos being Roman Catholic whereas Indonesia is predominantly muslim.

That being said, Indonesia and the Philippines share many cultural similarities. Both countries have diverse ethnic groups and are generally known for having hospitable, polite and friendly people. Similar lifestyles include; not considering something as a meal without rice, the tradition of eating with hands. Both countries are family oriented, often having extended families living together, marriage being considered important, children staying with parents until they get married, etc. Socially, both cultures value social approval and prioritise groups over themselves.

Singapore is known as a very small, young yet developed country in Southeast Asia. Although english was declared its official language in 1987, the population Mandarin and other varieties of Chinese are the most common languages spoken at home according to a population consensus. Despite both Singapore and Indonesia being countries in Southeast Asia, the cultures differ greatly. Indonesia’s official language is Indonesian, and it is a country known for its rich culture housed in its over 17,000 islands. Despite the Indonesian being the official language, there are over 300 different native languages spoken. Singapore on the other hand is relatively young nation, and time will shape the practices and social landscape of the nation to something that can be branded as its own.

Indonesia and its culture is one that has been shaped by a long history between indigenous customs and foreign influences. one thing Singapore and Indonesia have in common is the root of their culture, where Singapore’s contemporary modern culture consists of a combination of Asian and European cultures as well.
