    • Each stanza is connected by the speaker's sentiment that he "loves" his listener. There are four different stanzas in the poem, and each of these stanzas shows that the speaker is giving this poem to his listener to make them feel loved. After each of these stanzas, the speaker makes this clear by saying "I love you."

For example, when the speaker talks about “direction,” he could literally mean showing them the way, but also he could mean guiding them through life. Similarly, when the author talks about the “cold,” he could be referring to the actual winter, but he could also mean the cold demeanor of people in the world. With both of these words, the speaker is showcasing that love can help people—both physically and emotionally.

In the first stanza, the speaker makes use of similes, such as “like a warm coat” and “like a pair of thick socks” to show that the speaker is extending a warm embrace to the speaker, and that they want the poem to be a comforting gesture to the speaker’s audience. Similarly, the author employs metaphors throughout the poem like “it is a scarf for your head, to wear over your hair." In this metaphor, the speaker is showing that their words are something to shield the audience from the cold of the world. Both the metaphors and similes employed in the poem show that the speaker's words are meant to help the audience whenever they are in need.
