What was valuable to me was breaking out of my comfort zone about talking to strangers. It’s a difficult thing to just walk up to a random person and try to interview them. But I feel after this exercise it showed me that I have the ability to do these interviews well.

When I had to find strangers that were not on the UMD campus it was difficult to pick who I was going to speak to because of the assumptions I made on people.

I learned that people are more open than they appear. Many of the people I spoke to were happy to talk to me, and the others that didn’t respectfully declined.

One individual experience that stood out is the interview I had with Rich. Just learning about his journey through college and how he was in a similar position that I was in. I felt like he was very comfortable telling me his story.

I was unable to go on the trip to the Mona center, but what I got from listening to other people's experience is that it is important to empathize with our interviewee. Often times we forget to take other peoples point of view into account because we are so focused on getting the assignment complete. I believe it is important to show empathy towards other people and their situations to get meaningful connections and quality feedback from the interviewees on these trips to the center. I'm excited for the next trip so I can experience working in the field.

This week we met with our groups and talked about who we met and the conversations my group had with the interviewees. From the three people Paris, particularly stuck out because of how passionate she was about making healthy food available in her neighborhood. We were able to begin forming our final project by thinking about the issues within the community around the MONA center

This week we met as a class and discussed our HWM statements and found commonalities between everyone we interviewed in terms of the issues the community faced. I feel finding out common issues between our interviewees in a crucial part of our project to find viable solutions that can not only affect the person we interviewed but to try to connect the community as a whole. When trying to brainstorm solutions it was helpful watching the videos and to see how a brainstorming session should be done. I feel like our group was able to get the creative juices flowing and I feel it showed in our HMW statements.

This week we met the drum lady who helped us become comfortable with doing things that we've never done before. I feel like the lessons we've learned from her can translate into our projects. We have to be creative such as she is when she plays her drums. Often times we get stuck in our own little box. After having the class with the drum lady it showed me that getting out of our comfort zone can enable us to have these creative thoughts. I loved learning about the history of the drum, it was an extremely interesting class and definitely something I've never had in a classroom before.

This week we began prototyping and figuring out what we needed to achieve to solve our user's problem. Our group decided to do a role play to find a solution to access and lack of nutritious food. I feel like this step was important for us to begin thinking outside of the box, without limitations for a solution. Hayes and I both created two separate storyboards and compared them to one another. We then tried to combine our ideas to fill in the gaps of what each idea was missing. From there we were able to generate a tentative idea of what our solution might be.

During this weeks class our group created a tangible prototype for our solution for Paris. Our team created a model of how the "Pay What You Can Grocery" would be set up. Jim helped us create a role play for how customers would experience our solution. From there we went down to the common areas in ESJ and pitched our prototypes to UMD students. The goal of this was to get feedback, and look for ways we can improve our solution before we pitch it to people in Temple Hills. The students were extremely willing to help and we were able to get a point of view from someone that is not involved in the project.

This week we went to the Mona Center. This was my first time visiting and it was great touring the building and learning about the people who run it. I feel we got great feedback from the people we prototyped to. From their feedback our group brainstormed ideas on how to enhance our prototype to the next stage. One of the people we interviewed gave us some good advice on how to make our solution more applicable to the community.

This week we began to think about our final presentations. We created "innovation arcs" and "what we learned arcs". We used these to develop a flow for our final presentation of our final prototype. This allowed us to revisit why we were doing the project in the first place. We went back and thought about our user and we had to think about how to create empathy towards someone people haven't met. We thought about Paris, and created a narrative to create empathy and we would back up her story with statistics that we researched from Temple Hills. I feel like this class helped us create the story we have to tell to convince the people we are presenting to, how important our solution is to the community.
