The author uses simplistic, childlike, language to communicate a little boy’s perspective. Using the phrases “could not unfrown itself,” “my right ear scraped a buckle,” and “waltzed me off to bed” depicts childlike behaviors exemplified in the poem.

The author uses diction that is child-like to portray that the small boy is aware that his father is in a drunken state, but this memory is one that will stick in his head forever.
The first stanza talks about the father having enough alcohol in him to make a small boy dizzy. As the dance goes on the boy’s ear scrapes his father’s buckle and his father beats time on his head, but he keeps going because he loves this very distinct memory with his father.
