Collective Silent Walk no. 1 on campus with Dr. Razia

It was a normal Monday and Dr. Razia told us in class that we are going on our first campus walk. The instructions we received were that we were not supposed to talk during the walk and we were also not supposed to use our phone during the walk. While we were leaving SOE and Library, because we were in a group, walking quietly, I felt like everyone was staring at us. Or maybe, I felt this way, because I had a restriction on me to be silent and that made me think about the people around me in a much deeper sense. It was really hot. We walked from the library to the REDC side, I noticed the road and the road signs, and I wondered, that cars are not allowed here then why all these signs, then I thought to myself, maybe they allow cars on certain special occasions. We were walking along the Academic Block's road as well. I thought about its confusing but rather fascinating architecture. Has 4 entrances, from PDC, Outgate, REDC and Library. What a centre point it was, and it was strange to me, because this is the place, the campus, where I live 24/7 as I am a hostellite and yet it everything felt different today. Is this because we are doing a silent walk? I wonder. We walk towards the SSE block, what a huge building, but its entrance, is super spacious, there is a beautiful lawn right outside it, trees giving shade, some beautiful purple flowers. No other building at LUMS has that, why this privilege for SSE. We then walked from In gate, to Khokha which was pretty empty at this time, well I have always seen it beaming at night, we ended our walk near Law School and began a reflection exercise and got to know some really interesting things about the campus!

Jammin Java

The next segment of the activity was to form a group and go to your favourite spot on campus. Our group chose Jammin Java. Mahroz documented us while me, Aima and Waleed silently observed our surroundings.
When we sat down on the table, I was a bit uncomfortable, because I did not want people to be aware that I am observing them so i chose to stay in the same position throughout. However, my group member, Aima took a stroll, roamed around the cafeteria to have closer looks. Waleed on the other hand, sat on a different table. Waleed looked as if he was some detective because he had that serious look on his face and he was also noting down things. It seemed funny at the same time.

I noticed interesting things such as group of friends, who smiles, who didn't smile, with slow looking, I was also able to tell if a person was feeling left out or neglected. But what simply struck me was the ability to notice simple mundane things that exist in our daily lives but we pay zero attention to them.

I had never realised how many windows Jammin Java had and how much sunlight gets inside and lightens up the place during the day. The windows are huge and the sunlight from these windows comes inside like magic.

While looking at Frooti and Delish side by side, I made the comparison in my head about Frooti being healthy vs Delish being unhealthy but yet they are coexisting in one place.

Different people have different style to occupy a single space. Some people are very focused with their work while other are constantly talking to their friends even if they have laptop screens opened up infront of them. There is constant distraction and noise in the place.

Old Lahore: Delhi Gate and Bhatti Gate

A beautiful morning, Lahore looked cleaner and greener. Maybe, because I constantly compare it with my homecity, Karachi. I noticed lots of green. the way towards our destination was filled with curiosity and excitement. Even though I have been to Old Lahore a few times before but the thought of going there again always fills me up with so much happiness.

Dr. Razia kept telling us some significant places in between such as Kinnaird University for Women, she told us she has studied from there as well. That road seemed a little busier than other roads. When we crossed Data Darbar, there was a drastic change in the roads from the ones in DHA. These areas seem more lively, more humanly, more complicated.

We reached our destination, which was Delhi Gate, and waited for "Kotwal ka Farman" - I found this aspect of Old Lahore super interesting because I had never heard of it before.

We started our walk and started observing the houses, the shops, the narrow streets. One street in particular was called "Sabeel ki gali" there was a grave inside, the street was painted. On the wall, were photos of the street before WCLA (Walled City of Lahore Authority) started their work of renovation and preservation.

We entered another street, in which, there was a long queue for a Hakeem. Our tour guide had us entered a room where an old man played some instruments along with Punjabi Music. It was soothing to hear it even though I did not understand it and my whole attention was outside of the window on the long queue. The streets were decorated very beautifully because of the eve of 12 Rabi-ul-Awall.

It was interesting to note that these streets and bazaars had normal day to day activities going on. Perhaps, they were so used to of the historical significance of the places they lived in, that now, it does not bother them anymore. for them, it must be ordinary (and perhaps this is an assumption because we did not get to talk to people there, and had there been an opportunity, we would have gotten the people's opinion about how they feel about the space, the spectators and WCLA role)

We walked towards another gate from which one can have a clear view of Masjid Wazir Khan. I remember few years back, this masjid was on my list of places, because I had only seen it in photos or heard about it but now it was right in front of me. The flower patterns on its minar are something that one cannot be ignored.

We did some more walking towards our bus. Our next stop was Bhatti Gate. Out of the two gates we visited, Bhatti Gate was personally my favourite one. The fact that it was super ordinary, beaming with life, all kinds of shops (food, mechanics, grocery, sanitation etc.). Men, women, kids - all were present and actively participating in the space. The road was narrow, and there was traffic coming from all over the place. This whole area was also beautifully decorated because of 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal. It was super fascinating to note how simple, raw, organic that this gate was, yet there were efforts to somehow make it more aesthetically pleasing.

We were able to witness an Imam bargah there. We did not go inside, but this points out that there was alot of religious harmony in the places because all kinds of posters (implying different sects) were present. We noticed one ATM during this entire trip. And it was right next to Faqir Khana Museum. On our way back, we also saw Allama Iqbal's House and to be able to walk by the place where the person lived, of which we have read so much about was an enlightening experience.

Map Making (Paper Activity in Class)

Dr. Razia asked us to create something with the paper. After creating a fan, I used another paper and started drawing the map of the areas at LUMS which are the routes I take everyday. The main areas on the map are

Khokha

Library

SOE

Female Hostel

I also drew the lawn next to library, the iconic window of LUMS where everyone takes their photos, the cats on campus ans especially the cat outside f2. f2 used to be old hostel, I now live in f5. Map making allowed me to realise that living in this new city, in my head, I understand all the distances by measuring their distance from LUMS. I can also create a map of Lahore (of my most visited places or the places I remember). I think it will be a nice project to do. I also really like the feature of google photos, how it shows the photos against the places it were taken. As I write this, I also am making connections of the readings on Karachi where two artists (one of them Zahra Malkani) were mapping Karachi in a way that other aspects apart from violence are also traced and given importance. Because Karachi has now been purposefully, politically, tactically used for tension and violence when infact Karachi, the city, its people are alot more than that and it is important to showcase that. All community projects that involve ordinary people in them are a great starting like. It also reminds me of Black Spring video from Arts and Education.

Flower Patterns in Female Hostel

It is a usual Saturday evening, I am going from f5 (my hostel) to f6, to collect something from my friend. F6 hostel is a newly built female hostel at LUMS. It is called "The Three Sisters" Hostel. As soon as I entered the hostel, the walls of the hostel immediately caught my attention. Since, the hostel is newly built, alot of effort has been done into making it more aesthetically pleasing. The doors are yellow. The walls are all covered with paintings like these. But what is significant about these paintings is that, all of them, have some sort of pattern, mostly flower. It just immediately makes you stare it for a while. And this is not just on the ground floor, each floor has abundant of these paintings.

(Padlet doesn't allow me to put more pictures so I will attach the rest of the pictures in the google drive/pinterest)

These patterns remind me of the ones at Masjid Wazir Khan. Masjid Wazir Khan is filled with intricate flower designs on its walls. I have recently gotten into the habit of colouring mandalas. A mandala is a geometric configuration of symbols. Hence, I have built this new found association with colors, symbols, geometric patterns that make me think about their meaning more as well as serve an aesthetic purpose!

Shalimar Garden

This morning, I was very excited to visit Shalimar Garden (a place I had only seen in pictures, and it was on my bucket list) during my time at Lahore. Then, the interest got fuelled again because of our project on Parks. However, I was not sure about the Peripatetic box initially. Even though the process of making it was fun, but the thought of using it in a public place appeared strange.

As soon as we reached, the entrance was huge, and we could see orange line train from it. After the entrance in one gate, we entered the place from another gate. And my first thought about the place was underwhelming, because the fountains had trash inside them. Nevertheless, I started to look for more. The other significant thing were the benches and "Punjab Archaeology" written on them. The area for park, trees, wild plantation was huge and it was appreciated that the government maintained that. I also realised it is a world heritage site.

The moment we entered the main area, where the Emperor used to sit, with a dance floor/stage on water in front of him and beautiful structures surrounding it - the place started growing on me. The water seemed bad but pleasant. There were many boys in the area but it did not bother me at all. These were young school boys.

My perspective about peripatetic box changed when we started our first observation exercise and I actually used my box to document my thoughts, feelings. I started putting things inside my box and it made me feel more connected to the area. I took a piece of the place with myself. I kept thinking of the video Dr. Razia showed us class of how the man collected everything in the football ground. All of this tells us so much about the place, and the people inhabiting a certain place.

During this activity, we noted 10 places in Lahore. After identifying 10 places, we had to write 5 objects in those places, and for each object we had to write 5 sentences. Activities like these really take you down the memory lane. And they make you realise so much about our own selves, how we associate different things to different places. Even if we forget the details, we always remember the feelings. How a place makes us feel.

This exercise was a bit difficult in narrowing it down. Because there are so many places in Lahore that I have been multiple times yet we had to narrow down to 10.

During the class, when everybody got the chance to share their memories, Hadiya vividly remembered her memories associated with places and listening to her, I felt like I was imagining throughout. This also happened with me while reading Snuffing out the moon by Osama Siddiqui. His story writing and telling pattern instantly made me imagine.
