The term "metaphysics" is derived from two Greek words that mean "after or behind or among [the study of] the natural". Its goal is to explain the components of reality that exist outside of the material world. It employs logic derived from the meaning of human terms rather than rationality based on human way of knowing of external world.

Metaphysics affects the area of human life concerning the reality that exists beyond what we know and see. Studying metaphysics holds value as it has a broader scope and deals with things larger than what life tries to enlighten. It is also giving a person a sense of self-awareness, thus concluding as to why people go through existential crises and lose direction about the meaning of life. Delving into metaphysics provides answers to definite questions that serve as knowledge, truths, and values. It is not just touching reality but also the universe and religion, specifically the laws of nature set by God.

Plato (429 - 347 B.C.E) - Plato is a metaphysical dualist, he denies the monism of his predecessors. According to him, one must appeal to two radically different substances, the material (visible) and immaterial (invisible) substances in order to define reality. So reality can be seen as separated into two “realms”, the Realm of Being and The Realm of Becoming.

Immanuel Kant (1724 - 1804) - Kant believes that we could have metaphysical knowledge about God, souls, substance, and other similar things; they believed this knowledge is transcedentally real. However, he argues that humans are not capable of knowing anything outside of the empirical because our brains are limited to the empirical world of space and time.
