Ware, Helen. 2016. "Abbott's Immigration Policy: Open for Business." Social Alternatives 35 (2): 48-55. https://search-proquest-com.dbgw.lis.curtin.edu.au/docview/1844178501?accountid=10382

Main Idea: Australia looks at refugees as a threat to their way of living, yet the experts understand that they are not. I have chosen this as an idea because most of the children we are trying to educate or give more information to will be influence by their parents and this will be a common idea presented in households.
Supporting Evidence:
- Minister Dutton says that refugees "won't be numerate or literate in their own language, let alone English" then follows this statement with "these people would be taking Australian jobs". This creates that understanding that people who are qualified understand that refugees won't pose a significant risk to working class Australians, rather they are using refugees as a point of entry to gain votes from the working class (Page 54).

- "The June 2014 Audit by the Fair Work Ombudsman showed that 40% of the 457 visa holders [many being refugees] were being paid below the statutory minimum wage or had been let go." These positions are positions which are seen as 'below' a working class Australian, therefore they cannot threaten what an Australian does not want (page 53).

- Only 800,000 refugees have been settled in Australia since the end of World War II (page 50).

- More recently 13,750 places are being offered per year, most of these people are forced to stay in refugee camps. These people cannot pose a threat to the 'Australian lifestyle' if they are not here (page 50).

Why that was the chosen idea:

I chose to construct a website for the following reasons:

o It is an interactive platform, so kids can play around with it and get actively involved in their learning instead of just having it thrown at them and it all goes over their head.

o It would suit the target audience of children, as the inclusiveness of quizzes, pictures and videos would appeal to them a lot more than just tons of words.

o Kids are growing up with technology, so it would suit their expectations/way of learning.

o Displays different sections of information in an organised manner

o Allows for collaboration between other work- can include links.

How it helps the overall project:

The use of a website helps the overall project as not only does it appeal to the target audience, but it supplies a platform that they can consistently check back in with. By updating the website and including the videos and pictures, the kids can continue to learn- it’s not just a one use only thing.

The website also acts as a good overall depiction of the project- it includes the articles, the social media, the graphics and so forth.

They also showed how important it was for me and Chloe who is developing the web site to work together and communicate effectively.

This establishes that there is some way to go before there is more positive attitudes (page 1647).
