Yonkers, A Comprehensive Story of Segregation and Unequal Opportunity by Jared

The history of Yonkers is synonymous with the longstanding history of racial segregation, and redlining. It is impossible to discuss Yonkers and its history without mentioning its very publicized and controversial attempt at desegregation. The project I have constructed places the events of this desegregation, and its long lasting effects we see today, overlayed onto a map of the city. On May 13th 1986 Judge Sand officially ordered to desegregate Yonkers schools, which enacted an ongoing battle to this day to integrate the city. The current issues of race and class, stem from the atrocities of the past. It is becoming increasingly important for us as individuals to understand that the problems of today are not the fault of the individuals but rather systemic issues birthed by our racist history. I have decided to tell this story of systemic segregation through Yonkers, as it is where I have spent much of my childhood. My grandparents took care of me on Warburton Ave, still living there to this day. My father was in the last segregated high school class of Yonkers High, before the school was closed, and my mother was bussed to the other side of town in order to receive an equal opportunity. Many of my family members grew up in the Southwest side of Yonkers. My family history cannot be told without discussion of Yonkers and so I’ve chosen to talk about the policies that have shaped so many of our lives. I hope you enjoy the “Comprehensive Story of Segregation and Unequal Opportunity.”

Published in 1985, many years after Jim Crow and segregation had been abolished, the practice was continued in Yonkers for many years which lead to unequal opportunity for minority groups.

Heat Islands are regions in cities, that are barren of green areas, and covered in concrete, which trap the sun and heat, making the surrounding areas hotter. Formerly redlined regions of Yonkers suffer from being heat islands, lacking true green space even in parks, which was an attempt to indirectly label these places as undesirable. Formerly redlined, with reasons for this exclusion being the inhabitants of this neighborhood being black factory workers, and foreign born immigrants as seen in the provided image. The effects of redlining this neighborhood as well as many other South Yonkers neighborhoods led to decreased home ownership and a generational racial wealth disparity which legacy lives on today.
