-They give Merrick clean rooms, so his skin improved a lot and there was no longer a horrible smell. However, some new nurses are afraid of his appearance, to which Dr. Treves defends his right to be treated as a human being and not as a curiosity.

-Dr. Treves told me, "You and the nurses are very kind and I am very happy here, but I know I can't stay here long and I would like to live in a lantern after the hospital or a place for the blind."

Dr. Treves learns a little more about Merrick's personal life and the loss of his mother. At that moment, Merrick tells Dr. Treves about his idea of moving to a lantern or home for the blind.

Chapter 5
