The evidence states that back in Mesopotamia people honored gods and gods were really really important to them and they used art to decorate shrines, temples, and pots about them and it was like a prayer to them. And art was one of the ways to express yourself and if you knew how to draw you could decorate and paint gods and goddesses to show your respect and loyalty.

According to the Art article on paragraph 6 it states, “Art in Mesopotamia was often used to honor gods. Honoring a god with a statue or figurine was one way to invite the god’s protection. And the bigger, the better! The richest kings paid artists to carve and build large statues to demonstrate their power, so the gods might favor them.”
