From day one in my class I try and get to know my students. We have a fun activity during the first week where students design a lab coat. They put their interests, goals, and anything else they want me to know.

Polling devices are a great tool for identifying student interests. Students can use reflective online journal to set learning goals. Evernote or Kidblog are great tools for this. I keep track of my students through our facebook page. Parents post and you can keep track of your students achievements.
