The statement that "There are many ways to be a foreigner" in paragraph 29 means that Maria doesn't belong to either places. Because her parents live separately. She feels like she doesn't fit with either parent where they live. She had to make a decision to stay with Mami or Papi but she doesn't feel good in either place. The text states, "They were once Island women themselves. They know, sometimes you are born to be one or the other." This evidence shows that she can relate to the barrio woman but she doesn't completely relate to the barrio women. The text also states, "she listen, but do not speak, I am not a part of the barrio women's society. This shows that Maria is part of the barrio women but she still doesn't belong there because she is also from Puerto Rico. The statement that "There are many ways to be a foreigner" in paragraph 29 means that she doesn't belong in either New York or Puerto Rico.

The statement that "There are many ways to be a foreigner" in paragraph 29 means that Maria feels like she doesn't belong in either places. She had to make a decision to either stay with her dad in America. Or at Puerto Rico with her mom but she isn't comfortable in either places. Since her parents got a divorce. According to the text it states "They are watching me to see who I really am. Am I an Island women or a barrio women? Can I be both? This evidence shows that she doesn't know which one to choose. Maria doesn't fit with any environment. Additionally, according to the text it also states "I listen, but do not speak. I know that even though I am in their circle, I am not really a part of the powerful barrio women's society yet." This detail shows that even though Maria is lives with the barrio women she doesn't fit in. Since she is from two different worlds. Therefore , this proves that the statement that "There are many ways to be a foreigner" in paragraph 29 means that Maria feels like that she doesn't belong in neither places.

The statement "There are many ways to be a foreigner" means that Maria feels like she doesn't belong. She feels like the environment she is in right know is not for her. According to the text," Then she began to cry again. "It is like we are from two different countries, hija. Both Puerto Ricans, but we have never spoken the same language." This evidence demonstrates that Maria feels like she doesnt belong and feels like an outsider. The text also states that,"I know what that feels like. There are many ways to be a foreigner." This further demonstrates how Maria feels she does not belong in either environment. Overall, this is what the word "foreigner" means in paragraph 29.
