Something that I think the author did well when writing chapters 1 and 2 was, I think he did a very good job in describing Mark's independence. Mark is the main character of the book, and he is sick. He has a disease that will prevent him from doing, nothing. He is actually going, only him and his dog, to climb a mountain. In chapter 1 it says, "The mountain was calling me. I had to run away. I had to. And I didn't need anyone to go with me. I tightened the straps on my backpack and held the front screen door opened with my foot. 'Come on, Beau' I called…” This shows that he really wanted to climb the mountain, and he didn’t want anyone else but his dog to go with him. He was brave and confident, but I wonder if that will change throughout the story, or when he gets to the mountain.

I wonder what Mark’s parents are doing about him missing. In chapter one, it said that they called the police, and they were trying to find him but now it has been a long while. If I were an adult and I noticed that my child was missing, I wouldn’t rest until I found him or her, I would be really worried, especially if they were sick. And, I also know that if I were a child, I would not want to go to climb a mountain by myself. No guidance, and no adult. This makes me wonder why Mark wants to do this because it is very scary and he said he may never come back.

I wonder why Mark decided to bring his dog, Beau along with him. If they are climbing a mountain, it could get cold, they could get hurt, and his dog could get lost. Also, dogs are a lot to handle so I would think that would make more trouble for Mark. I know that Mark really loves his dog, which is why he brought him along, but I would also think that Mark would want to protect him, instead of their being a possible risk of losing him.

I think that it was definitely selfish of Mark to bring his dog with him. He is so focused on his goal of climbing the mountain , but he doesn't understand that his dog Beau could be hungry, and cold, and could get sick. Mark wouldn't know what is wrong because he is both busy with focusing on trying to make sure he doesn't get caught running away, and trying to hide Beau since dogs are not aloud in most places. I really don't think that he should have brought Beau with him on his journey because Mark is not able to give him his full attention which, in my opinion, is selfish of him.

I wonder if he will reach his goal of climbing the mountain. He seems so determined to climb it and get to the top, but it doesn't seem like he had the proper equipment to do that. I think that is why he says that he may never come back. He lost his hopes of fighting his disease, so he figured that he should complete his goal before he cant fight his disease anymore.

I wonder why Mark wanted to go to climb the mountain in the first place. He would be leaving his family and his best friend behind, and risking his life. He wasn't worrying about how his family would react to him being gone, and he didn't worry or think about what would happen to him. I think he should have though more about these things before he left.

One problem in the story is that while Mark was at the dinner, there was a missing child alert on the television, and it was for him. Mark saw the alert, and did not want to waitress to see it because he would have had to go home. His picture came up on the television, so he made sure that the waitress stayed busy, so she wouldn't have seen the alert. Luckily, she didn't but after that Mark left the dinner just in case it came up again.

In my opinion, there is a struggle between two characters in the story. i think the struggle is between Mark and his best friend Jessie. Mark and Jessie are best friends who have done everything together. When Mark decided to leave, he had not told Jessie in person, because he knew that she would stop him, so instead he wrote on the bricks that they have sent secret messages to each other on since they became friends. In the text it says, "Even in the the darkness her hands had no trouble finding the loose brick, the one with the secret little space behind it, They'd been using it for years, her and Mark. A secret place only they knew about, a place they used to share secrets and pass notes." This shows that Mark did want to let Jessie know where he was going, but he wanted to let her know after he was gone so that she wouldn't stop him form going.

I wonder if Mark has been planning on climbing the mountain, or been wanting to climb the mountain for a long time. I wonder this because it could have been his goal, or on something like his bucket list for when he is older. On the other hand, it could have been something that he wanted to do when he found out that he was sick, and he wanted to do it before he got too sick.

Form the book, we can tell that he told Jessie, but I wonder if he told any of his other friends, or people at school. Or, maybe his parents told friends of their, or they could have kept it a secret.

Since it would be such a hard thing for him to process and live with, I wonder how she finally told him the news. I wish they would have included this in the book because it would be interesting to see how she would tell him and, I would know his mom or dad's personality and if they are caring, or not.

I think that it was a good idea for the author to have the people from the restaurant to be nice to Mark. I think this because if they weren't nice, than Mark never would have given up and gone home, but they were very generous. The gave him food which motivated him to climb the mountain, and not give up.
