1. Single stories are incomplete, vague, inaccurate depictions of a whole story. A single story tells only one side, or one perspective, of a group of people.

2. Single stories are often told by people in power, or people trying to gain power and control. They are trying to gain control by picking a group of people, usually a minority, to blame for specific events. Ex. Muslims are inaccurately blamed for 9/11 or associated with terrorism. Mexicans are associated with being drug dealers or dangerous, bad people. All of these are inaccurate, hateful single stories told for political gain.

3. Stereotyping is often unconscious because we are told the same single story over and over again. We have to unlearn the single stories that we have been told. Single stories call out our differences rather than celebrating our similarities.
