         <title>Berlin Blockade/Airlift</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date</strong>: 1948-1949<br><strong>Causes</strong>: <br><strong>Individuals/groups involved: <br></strong>The United States and Britain were involved in the airlift and the Soviet Union was involved in the blockade portion. People included: President Truman and General Clay.<br><strong>Significant features:<br></strong>- stops refuges from traveling to west Berlin<br>- powerful symbol of divided Europe<br>- airlift was used to supply one side of Germany that was cut off from everything<br>- Soviets lifted blockade after the Americans would not stop supplying (no point)<br><strong>Whether or not it was a NATO/Warsaw Pact issue:<br></strong>- NATO because the United States came into help.<strong><br>Whether or not it was connected to the Containment theory:<br></strong>- yes because the United States was trying to stop the spread of communism. <br><strong>Was it a victory for Capitalism or Communism:<br></strong>-yes, the United States "won".<br><strong>Whether or not it was a nuclear weapons issue:<br></strong>- no weapons used</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Date</strong>: August&nbsp; 13, 1961<br><strong>Causes</strong>: <br>- to divide Germany <br>- establish dense Communism<br><strong>Individuals/groups involved:<br></strong>- East Germany<br>- West Germany<br>- The United States<br>- The Soviet Union<strong><br>Significant features:<br></strong>- established over night with troops<br>- East Berlin was under Communism<br>- West Berlin was under a Democracy <br>- 2.5 million people fled from East to West Berlin (most went to West)<br>- 2,000 Germans crossed into the West everyday but now could not<br><strong>Whether or not it was a NATO/Warsaw Pact issue:<br></strong>- NATO because the United States came in to help the struggling West.<br><strong>Whether or not it was connected to the Containment theory:<br></strong>- Yes, the US came into help to ensure that West Berlin was not entrapped&nbsp; by the Communism around them.<br><strong>Was it a victory for Capitalism or Communism:<br></strong>- Not either really, but the Soviets eventually gave up about a year later and took the wall down.
