Poverty in Afghanistan is very severe, nearly everyone is living on the breadline and cannot afford anything new or expensive. Poverty sets society back - this is not a 21 century post - industrial landscape, the mud huts, the little villages. Poverty and war drove the country to a very traditional way of living and there is hardly a way to go back now.

These people lead such a poor and miserable life just because some upper-class first world citizens decided that a war there would be a good decision. Innocent people are suffering because of that, if not now, soon. Having to build a new society on top of the one crushed by the war is a nearly impossible challenge and I do not think it that people should be subjected to it without any aid from those able to provide it.

The author makes us feel compassionate for the people by showing the readers their day-to-day lives. When speaking about extreme poverty, almost nobody likes to directly show us the life these people lead, but the way the Hosseini humanizes them is the main reason why this text makes us feel so emotional and uncomfortable at the same time. We begin to realize that poverty exists beyond fiction and news channels. We are given a first-person view on the life of the Afghan people and it shocks us, as it rightfully should.

There are many humanitarian funds and organizations that help the poor, but they prove to be not quite effective. The reason behind it is that the funds simply do not have enough money to financially support the poor and also because most poor people cannot begin working or living a normal life straight after they are given some money and shelter. It is either their physical or mental condition, which became more troubled because of their poverty or was the reason they lived on breadline initially. Just having poor people food and money does not work, because it is not enough. Poverty changes people and the charity organizations should not only focus on humanitarian aid, but also on their rehabilitation and reintegration into working class society.

As I see it, there are two types of poverty. First one is correlated with laziness, alcohol addition (and other additions, certainly) etc. This type is not very easy to ‘beat’ as person have to get over himself and start building life all over again. However, it is, I would say, possible. In the other scenario, people have not done anything by themselves that had led to them being poor. Such state is usually caused by some massive events that happened in the county. People are poor not because they don’t work hard enough, but because there is literally no money in the whole country or city.
