What sampling method did the group use in this GI?
We decided to have a variety of different age group but at the same time randomised our interviewees.
2. What is the reason for selecting this sampling method?
We chose this sampling method as we would like our interview to consist of different age groups so that we would have a greater variety of answers and it also shows the different perspective of the different age group, giving us a glimpse of others point of view. The random method also gives us a greater and wider chance of looking for the different age groups as we need not focus on only one age group as we are open to any.

The places that are special to its residents in the neighbourhood are mainly the neighbourhood coffee shops, shopping mall and playground. What these three have in common are that these are places where people get to communicate with people, where a sense of familiarity and peace among everyone is felt, the sense of security of knowing the place and facilities well, where one can unexpectedly bump into one another, bringing out a sense of friendliness not often found in daily hetic lives. People forge strong bonds with one another, further bringing out the sense of belonging to the neighbourhood. The residents described that Toa Payoh was a place that brought out a conversation topic like “Oh you stay in Toa Payoh? Me too!” and that it was the source of warmth and familiarity felt around the place. It was where most of the residents relieve stress by roaming around the streets of Toa Payoh or going to the shopping mall, sitting down on benches on the way and chatting with friends. There is a quote ‘good times come and go, but the memories last forever.’ This is perhaps the sentence most suitable to what the residents feel about it. The memories and stories shared by one may be different from the other, however it all carries across the same feeling of security, warmth and familiarity. The recent development in Toa Payoh may have put upon a stop to the lovely memories and stories to be shared. For example, the residents say it brings upon a doubt of belonging due to the changes and upgradings made upon Toa Payoh. The saying goes ‘More is less, less is more.’ Perhaps further development to Toa Payoh only brings more confusion and less familiarity towards Toa Payoh. People change as places do. Who knows? Maybe in the future there will not be the existence of such friendliness, warm feeling that Toa Payoh brings about in the future. The reasons are mainly perhaps more sentimental; emotional and historical reasons. As said, Toa Payoh have changed over the years, with renovations often made to make the place more easily accessible and enjoyable. As Toa Payoh is the second satellite town after Queenstown, it will most probably be recorded in the history books of Singapore. It also brings about emotions as the people may not be able to forget the memories and ties forged in the years of living in Toa Payoh.

1. What were the strengths and challenges experienced by the group?
Our group had a tough time looking for people who were willing to spend their time helping us with the interview. We also had trouble with communication of languages as some of the people we approached like the elderly we speaking in dialect that we did not really understand. However we displayed GRC as taught in our school and were still as polite and understanding to the people who rejected the interview and thanked them. Communication with the elderly was kind of difficult however a teacher aided us with the translation and we got to finish the interview smoothly although with the hiccups in the beginning. Another challenge we faced was rejection. Many was not willing to stop and take the time to do the survey; some even left before we even finished our sentences. Though, we had problems with finding the right interviewees, most of the people we approached right after were very polite and patient with us and was willing to complete the survey.
2. How did everyone work together?
We split our group into two to cover a larger space area and in order to finish interviewing 10 people as soon as possible. All of the group members did their specific role properly, enabling the finishing of the project getting done quite smoothly. We did not have any communication breakdowns and we were all cooperating together to finish the task on time.
3. How were issues resolved?
Our group displayed GRC STAR attributes and we were self-directed as we went around to ask for interviews as we had to get the project done in a limited amount of time. All of us were team players and worked well together as a group and were active contributors in due course of the execution of the project. Although there were language barriers and lack of willing people to do the interview, we were determined to finish the project and did not give up. Facing the rejections from the public at the start, we quickly learnt that we have to be more approachable and always put on a cheery smile. We started off feeling scared and had a lack of confidence, which was probably why we mostly got turned down when asked for interviews.

Toa Payoh was built by HDB in august 1960. The name "Toa Payoh" means ‘big swamp’, from the words toa ('big' in the Hokkien/Teochew) and payoh (a Malay word for 'swamp', paya). in September 1973, Toa Payoh gained had a sports complex and a swimming complex and also a public library. More facilities were added over the years within Toa Payoh such as a bus interchange, an MRT station, a park, as well as community centres. After lots of hardwork, Toa Payoh transformed from 'Kampong' to a HDB with endless neighbourhood shops.
