Whether in my personal life, relationships, or whether it is something I am doing at the moment. This semester and right before, I worried that teaching and college wasn't for me. I worried if I knew I was destined to fail, why try? I had to learn to look inward and realize that it was my insecurities telling me that I am not worth it. I am not worth all the victories I could achieve if I applied myself. I had to look deep within myself and pull out this unlocked ability to work hard and achieve good. I have achieved an award scholarship and have taught children in the community I grew up in -- knowing and seeing myself succeed makes me want to try even harder. My father was dropped into classes where he has forced to pick up the language with no additional help. I say this to highlight the efforts that are now put in place to help immigrants where English might not be their first language. And while, we aren't yet there (at full and easier transitions), we have defiantly come a long way. Meaning, there is an unspoken bias when it comes to disciplining them, in this case, in an educational setting. Simply meaning this: black and brown boys (speaking in majority terms) are more likely to be punish more often; therefore, more harshly; and they are more likely to miss their education and be held back a grade. Rations were often withheld from parents as a means of compelling them to send their children to school." But the heavy stress applied through America's common core is overdone. Whether in blue or white collared jobs, you will come across people who won't speak the same language, eat the same food, or even have the same religion as you. I find it so important to coexist. We were both always so confused and lost -- and in comparison to our classmates, we were always behind. He was diagnosed with both ADHD and a behavioral disability and would often show his confusion with aggression. Even through his violent outbursts, my teacher was able to connect with him. She was able to break through this wall and touch his heart. She sat with him, explained things to him in such a simple and non-condescending way.  I remember this was the year that we read Percy Jackson and we had just started reading. Before we found out that one of the main characters, Grover, was a satyr she had us guess based off of context clues. No one was able to guess but he did. Everyone laughed at him. That's when my teacher stepped in and lectured us on what bullying is and what it looked like. And how by laughing at him, we were bullying him. She put so many things into perspective and had so much heart for all of her students.
