When some students do not know what a Kakapo is, he asks that they draw their best guess. Afterward, Gallager shows his students what a Kakapo looks like and everyone laughs at what they thought a Kakpo looks like. Next, Gallager allows his students to revise their drawings. This time around, the drawings are far more accurate. He tells us this to show the importance of modeling texts for student writing. If they do not have access to quality examples, they will not be able to produce their own exemplary writing. Students are then able to understand the importance of using models for writing. That is why I think the most important parts of Gallagher's suggestions are asking students to identify what the author is doing and revisiting the model text. If students are just given the text and asked to model it without help identifying what the text is doing, a lot of students will be unsuccessful. We need to scaffold and assist, especially the first reading. Secondly, revisiting the text is equally important. Many of the assignments feature excerpts from authors. Students are then asked to model the writing using a topic of their choice. I've seen some great work from students. I plan to continue doing these Weekly Writing assignments and have even begun acquiring my excerpts.
