Print-rich environments in an early childhood education setting allows children to be exposed to the fundamentals of reading and writing. It sparks the curiosity that comes naturally to children, where they can ask questions, begin to formulate sounds by recognizing letters, and begin to find meaning in a word itself.

The picture above is an example of a very print-rich environment. Signs and labels are put everywhere along with detachable print for the children to explore sounds and phonics. The room uses themes as well to allow children to recognize certain words and patterns. It lets children become engaged in a topic that might peak their interest, which in turn leads to communication and discussions.

All-in-all, a print-rich environment in an early childhood setting does more than just help children learn to read, it helps children become aware and more observant of their surroundings, and that print is more than just words. It's that these words hold power and meaning!

Everyone in Germany knows Bobo, the dormouse who gets to go on many adventures with his parents. Today, Bobo got to go shopping at the grocery store with his mom and dad! In the dramatic play area, the normally very active room was turned into a reading area. After reading about Bobo's experiences, the children got to open their own grocery store and go shopping. With communication and laughing in fully swing, the children didn't even realize they were practicing their vocabulary and literacy skills. The room, filled with store specials noted on the wall and grocery baskets read to use, was a live-action shopping center!

It is important for such activities to take place because it allows the children to follow a storyline and reenact the happenings using learned vocabulary and oral communication skills. Providing open-ended questions about the story guided by the teacher will the guide the children into play. Then, while in the moment, the children begin to create their own story!
