A salt marsh is a flooded wetland drained by salt from the incoming tides. Salt marshes have soil that is made of deep mud and peat giving it the typical soft marshy texture. Peat is made from decomposing plant matter. Some other salt marshes around America are located on the states on the atlantic coast of America(North Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, Virginia and New York)

What's unique about the meadowlands salt marsh?

The meadowlands salt marsh in the 20th century was used for landfills and the area was abused, many different metals were found contaminating the salt marsh as well as toxic chemicals and oil. When a chemical like oil spills into the salt marsh it can harm the environment by chemical toxicity, smothering, increasing pH levels as well as preventing oxygen to flow plants roots, this can cause severe damage to plants and animals like birds, crab, fish and shrimp etc. which can harm the ecosystem. Currently the salt marsh at the meadowlands are home to thousands of animal species including Carp, Killifish, Grass Shrimp and Eagles.

Oils affect on a salt marsh:
https://response.restoration.noaa.gov/about/media/effects-deepwater-horizon-oil-spill-coastal-salt-marsh-habitat.html

What Lives in A Salt Marsh?

Salt marshes are home to many different species. The marsh is home to hundreds of species of invertebrates as well as fiddler crabs, hermit crabs and many different bird species as well. Fish and shrimp come into salt marshes looking for food or for a place to lay their eggs. Without a home for a shrimp or any species for that matter, a species cannot reproduce and have a suitable home to live in, these two things almost define the most important aspects of how a species thrives. Fiddler crabs are the most common crabs in a salt marsh, the male crabs have an oversized making them distinct from most crabs and are also seen typically moving sideways. Fiddler Crabs aren't just found in salt marshes they can also be found on sandy or muddy beaches of West Africa, the Western Atlantic, the Eastern Pacific and the Indo-Pacific, fiddler crabs are easily recognized by their distinctively asymmetric claws.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiddler_crab
