(JCB) appendix (401-424) advertising/research methods

Advertising is everywhere, in all of our daily lives. Like through build boards, buses, or a bench. Some people love advertising, like the Superbowl ads or videos that go viral on social media, mainly because those ads are things people want to see unlike, ones that people find annoying like ads before a movie or webpage.

Brands tend to get most of their money through advertising. For an example, Google makes the most money for advertising. Google makes around 26.8 % of the total digital advertising revenue generated in the U.S. as well as the largest digital ad publisher in the country. (https://www.statista.com)

Advertising is clearly a complex phenomenon. When making ads you got to think about what the people want, will they find this enjoyable, or entertaining, is this something can make a person feel emotions like happiness or sadness. That is where research comes in to help understand what advertising can do the best.

Complex social phenomenon like advertising can be studied many different ways through many different types of research methods. Some method could be qualitative data which is about advertising viewers might take the form of a quote from an interview with an audience member about what they think about the ad. This is one way to see how people react and think about ads they see.

"Social science methods are good for finding out the facts without relying on tradition or authority" (Josee Johnston, Kate Cairns, Shyon Baumann 2016 page 404). This kind of allows researchers to do their own thing, a way to be able to get their own opinion on something.

At the end of the day having effective research can help understand consumer behavior and though on the advertising that is posted, to help the brand build up their success through ads.

(H) 29-47: Henslin, doing sociological research

All of us want to know the truth. The meaning of life, our purpose. To find that meaning, you should pace experiences in (our "facts") into a conceptual framework. That what sociologists can do/does.

As we all know, sociologists are fascinated with the unknown. Sociologists must gather information about the persons attitude and behavior correctly. When they write their report, they must have lots of detail so that other can test their conclusions.

There are many different methods to be used when sociologist do their research. Sociologist actually use more than one method when doing their research, they combined methods. interviews, documents, and or experiments are all different methods used for research.

Common sense is something that can be used to give sociologists information. some common sense is true but not always which is where sociologists need to research to test the validity and accuracy of their ideas. An example: "common sense also tells us that one reason men rape is the revealing clothing that some women wear...common sense can also say men rape because they are sexually depraved" (James M. Henslin 1972 page 36).

There are many research methods that can be used when wanting to find your answer. Some sociologists use the sixth research method to help and gather data for their survey's documents and observations. Others use surveys. Some find a research method and stick to it while others it can depends on capricious events, which is what can lead then towards what research they would want to use.

Over two million individuals are currently facing time in jail, while over half a million get released each year. The number keep going up almost every year more people can be found up in jail. To answer the question myself, I feel like it would depend on the situation. I believe in second chances and well as forgiveness. And I think at the end of the day if they met the requirements to the job and have shown growth of doing better/being a better person, why not. Being in jail can have a big effect on a person trying to get employed, since it's on their record.

People keep to themselves now days, going anywhere it doesn't even have to be at a coffee shop. Looking around everyone is doing their own thing, looking down on their phones in their own world.

Most people are alone, or with a group of people they know, it's rare to see someone go up and talk to a stranger, but when you do see it, its normally an older person trying to start some little talk with someone.

It's always so awkward, or quiet. But when you have those more outgoing people in your group the space can always feel welcoming or fun. My boyfriend for an example he is the complete opposite of me, he is very talkative loud outgoing, always trying to get people to smile even if he doesn't know them.

The coffee shop/Starbucks that is by my house tends to get more teenagers/highschoolers. Races varieties but seems its right by a high school during the week lots of highschooler sit in groups outside and inside talking and studying with each other.

(JCB) Chapter 10 branding/the self and social interaction

We all buy things, things we love as people. This is one of the many things that make us individuals different. What we were. the decorations around our house or rooms, what brands we own like Honda or Nike. "Consumption can certainly afford us a sense of individuality" (Josee Johnston, Kate cairns, Shyon Baumann 2016 page 277).

Most people think of themselves or each other as "self". But Cooley, Mead, and Goffman think otherwise. These three are major sociological thinkers who developed the idea of a social sense of self: Symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism- a theoretical perspective that emphasizes how our social world is created through our everyday relationships and interactions. This is something that happens over time through material culture. Sociologists have shown how our sense of self and identity are socially constructed.

Things we buy isn't just things. We as people look and view other at the stuff people buy/wear/have. When walking around if you see someone wear Gucci or Gold or something you know is a lot, in your head you view that person as maybe rich or has a good job at least. We are the things we buy. We buy things to look cool or feel better about our self. We buy our sense of self through brands, that's why we are socially constructed.

When you're out and about you always want to have your best foot forward. At least when I'm out, I always want to look presentable somewhat nice. You don't know what others think about you, and you don't know who you may met, who knows maybe you'll met the president or something.

Meeting new people, we always have our own thoughts about them before even getting to know them. Us as people seek to acquire information about someone we just met.

Information about someone helps build an understanding of who this person real is, it helps the situation, so you know how to act in front of said person you just met. You can find things about people by; looking at them, what they wear, how they talk, body language, and or communicating.

There are two kinds of communication, expression given and expression given off a nonverbal way of communicating, examples can be like hand gestures or head nodding. The other way of communicating is talk of course.

At the end of the day, people will always have assumption about the ones around them, it's your choice if you want to try and control the impression you give others during any situation.

(JCB) Chapter 5: shopping/social order

I enjoy shopping, I love buying things, especially clothes. I enjoy the idea of staying with trend and looking cool and feeling good about myself, I feel like a lot of people can agree with this. Which is why a lot of scholars see shopping as a social problem. Which leads me to questions, is shopping good or bad? Does it cause chaos and fighting or bring people together and having a reason to bond with on another? "How does consumer culture-and shopping specifically- contribute to social order?" (Josee Johnston, Kate cairns, Shyon Baumann 2016 page 125). Social order is referred to the degree of stability, order, and cohesion in society. But when looking at it even in a sociology way, there is no truth if shopping is good or bad. In some ways it can be bad, but it can also be good. Shopping is both an expression of, and a response to, the social facts at play in a particular place and time. shopping is a way consumers "fit in" with society.

Some say, "that's the automatic response to the question." But even taking time to think about the question I feel like you would be a bad person to do that. You're not God, he makes the choice on who dies or not, not you. Hitler was a bad person, and a sick person too. I want nothing to do with him. I hope no one want to do anything this man says. Fast food is one of the most gross and unhealthy things that we as people eat quite often. It quick its cheap, and sometimes taste good. Fast food has entered the media spotlight not only as a consumer good but also as a key site of labor unrest. People who have worked in the fast-food industry have said many good and bad things about working there. Long shift, Bad working conditions, low wages etc. People do not enjoy working there. Fast food has gone downhill today, it's not fast and can be very expensive sometimes just for a meal. Almost anyone would rather work at fats food with the money they make today, since the economy is so bad and expensive no one can buy anything.
