During the Second Wizarding War, Voldemort gained Dementors on his side. There were many Muggle-killings. For example, a "hurricane" that killed many Muggles was actually an attack by giants.

Voldemort fought and killed the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and concocted a plot to kill the headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore. His plot was successful and Hogwarts was no longer safe from Lord Voldemort.
