Reading and Literary Focus Questions

Reading Focus: What contradictory attitude toward the "World" is reflected in these two poems?
Dickinson starts off by saying, "the World /
. . . never wrote to Me" (Dickinson 1-2). The world is characterized as a person that Dickinson can write "a letter" to. This shows that the world is neglectful of Dickinson's writing. However, Dickinson also describes the world as "tender" and "Majesty" (Dickinson 4). There are a multitude of reasons why someone would not write back, but Dickinson continues to communicate with the world by writing poetry.

Literary Focus: Analyze How does this poem reflect Dickinson's concerns with faith and immortality?
In the poem, Dickinson's conflicting thoughts on her faith are reflected in the quote, "Her Message is committed / To Hands I cannot see—" (Dickinson 5-6). Though people are told that things are in God's hands, Dickinson says that she cannot "see" those hands, or understand the message God is trying to send. However, she still trusts that there is some underlying purpose to all of this.

1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?
The poem's tone is a voice with acceptance. "To "Hands I cannot see—/for love of Her—Sweet—countrymen—/Judge tenderly—of Me" (Dickinson 6-8) Even though Emily cannot see her own death she accepts her future death.
2. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?
The letter to the world is a symbol of her own recognition of her own isolation of the world. Nature is a universal symbol of the whole world and the everyone included in it.
