In June 1792 Haydn left London for Germany. On his journey, he stopped at Bonn, where the 22-year-old Ludwig van Beethoven was introduced to him, and it was arranged that the tempestuous young composer should move to Vienna to receive Haydn’s instruction. In a letter of 1793 to Beethoven’s patron, the elector of Cologne, Haydn stated that “Beethoven will one day be considered one of Europe’s greatest composers, and I shall be proud to be called his teacher.”

With persistence and energy, Haydn made progress. He was eventually introduced to the music-loving Austrian nobleman Karl Joseph von Fürnberg, in whose home he played chamber music. For the instrumentalists there he wrote his first string quartets. In 1758 Haydn was promoted as musical director chamber composer for the Bohemain count Ferdinand Maximilian
von Morzin through the recommendation of Fürnberg. Haydn was put in charge of an orchestra of about 16 musicians, and for this ensemble he wrote his first symphony as well as numerous divertimenti for wind band or for wind instruments and strings.

Musical Background Contribution (Classical Era)

He was groundbreaking in the Classical period for his contributions to the form of the symphony, the string quartet, the piano trio, and sonata-allegro form. Haydn’s style evolved from a very emotional style (his Sturm und Drang era) to a lighter, comical style, and then finally to his “popular style” which contained a lot of folk music and folk music references. Much of Haydn’s music was designed to entertain his elite patrons, and he put a lot of humor in his music. A great example is his “Surprise” Symphony, but he also liked to throw false endings in his pieces to trick people.
