“Cultural heritage”, the tangible and intangible assets inherited from previous generations, is vital in shaping a group's identity and connecting it to history. It is the foundation of every nation on the planet, providing individuals with a sense of solidarity and belonging to a group while also helping people to comprehend and appreciate their shared culture. Traditions, language, history, crafts, rituals, and knowledge are all examples of cultural heritage that are passed down from generation to generation within a group. Societies may encourage diversity, understanding, and respect among diverse populations by maintaining and promoting cultural history, as well as ensuring a common link and sense of belonging for all. However, in the face of globalization and modernity, cultural heritage preservation confronts several problems, making it critical for local communities to band together and establish measures for its conservation and preservation.

Cultural heritage is a crucial aspect of our lives because it shapes our identities and impacts our actions, providing a shared relationship that spans time. It serves as a bridge linking the past, present, and future within communities by including both tangible and intangible components such as objects, customs, and languages. Cultural heritage preservation is critical for sustaining a sense of belonging and allowing future generations to understand their beginnings. The idea of cultural legacy, which is rooted in historical evolution, gives varying values to tangible and intangible characteristics. The preservation and safeguarding of this legacy is critical to building community diversity, understanding, and respect. Memory institutions, such as archives and museums, are responsible for maintaining and interpreting this cultural record, making it more than simply a historical topic but a practical necessity for society cohesion and growth.

As a member/student of the Xavier School community, I could assist to maintain and preserve cultural heritage in a variety of ways. First and foremost, I feel that educating myself and others about the importance of cultural heritage is fundamental. This can be accomplished through the organization or participation in cultural activities, customs, and celebrations within our school community. Spending time with members of my cultural group, learning and speaking ancestral languages, and recording elders' customs and beliefs via interviews may all help to conserve and carry on our cultural heritage. Furthermore, participating in activities like as art, music, and traditional handicraft may help to promote and preserve our cultural heritage. Finally, increasing public knowledge of the value of cultural heritage and the risks it confronts, such as globalization and modernization, might motivate people to take action to ensure its preservation. I feel that by actively participating in these activities, we as high school students can help to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage in our communities and abroad.

What Exactly is Globalization?

Before understanding how Globalization affects Cultural Heritage, it is important to first know what Globalization really is. Simply put, Globalization is the process by which countries become more linked, as seen by the interchange of products, services, technology, and information across national borders. It has far-reaching consequences for economies, cultures, and civilizations throughout the world, including increased economic growth and cultural interchange, but also the possibility of exploitation and inequity.

Impacts

With this said, the trend of globalization will inevitably have a serious impact on traditional culture. The emergence of globalization may lead to regression or even loss of indigenous culture. Globalization is almost like a double-edged sword. Although Globalization may act as a platform for the spread and appreciation of local cultures while also promoting cultural variety and pluralism. Globalization, particularly Westernization, on the other side, can represent a challenge to local cultures, particularly those with little representation or influence, may feel forced to change or risk being eclipsed as Western ideals, languages, and lifestyle choices frequently dominate global media. In general, Globalization has the potential to both benefit and destroy cultural heritage. It can disseminate customs and knowledge all across the world, but it can also contribute to the extinction of distinct local traditions. Increased interconnection can lead to cultural homogeneity, thus jeopardizing the preservation of various and distinct cultural heritages.

In summary, As a high school student, I find the concept of globalization and its impact on cultural heritage to be both fascinating and concerning. On the one hand, globalization presents an opportunity to learn from and appreciate diverse cultures, while on the other hand, it can lead to the loss of unique local traditions. This understanding inspires me to engage in activities that promote cultural exchange, tolerance, and the preservation of traditions. By participating in discussions, educational activities, and initiatives that explore the effects of globalization on cultural heritage, I can contribute to a more inclusive and interconnected global community. This awareness also encourages me to take an active role in safeguarding and celebrating the rich tapestry of global cultural heritage, fostering mutual respect and understanding among different communities. With all the knowledge presented, I now finally realize that it is essential to recognize the importance of cultural heritage and to take action to preserve and promote it for future generations.

As the Christmas season approaches, I, as a member of a school in the Philippines, would want to celebrate by setting up decorations such as sparkling trees and presents. Filipino Christmas culture embraces traditions like Simbang Gabi, Parol lanterns, Noche Buena feasts, and Aguinaldo gifts. Carols and festive gatherings contribute to a joyous and communal celebration. Filipinos are also Catholics, which is why they regard Christmas as a significant holiday because it commemorates the birth of Jesus. In the context of globalization, it has enriched traditional celebrations with a variety of influences on Christmas in the Philippines, including Western decorations, international carols, and globalized gift exchange.

SEE

The picture shows twinkling lights wrapped around the tree, ornaments such as jingling bells, a shining star topper, and presents representing the season of giving.

HEAR

The intangable example can be seen as people joyfully celebrating christmas by singing christmas songs, giving gifts to each other, watching movies, etc.
