Paul wrote his poem to address problems of gentrification in San Francisco's Mission District. This poem was inspired by an incident in which three Mexican men were beat with a crowbar by the bar owner himself because they were hanging around his establishment. Paul's tone seemed crucial because his poem is about the injustice of gentrification.
