The ISTE Standard for Educators that I am working on developing is the designer role. I want to design student driven learning opportunities that apply to the real world. I want to become familiar with different modes of technology that I can use to achieve this goal. -Stephanie Hasenberg

I believe that it is important to have ISTE Standards for both students and teachers because it gives educators an outline of to follow. I like to think of it as a mental checklist. If I am doing all of these things as an educator, I am meeting my student's need effectively. The student standards allow for effective planning. I have a basic outline of what I want my students to be able to do and I can align my lessons to get them there. -Stephanie Hasenberg

I think it is important to have ISTE Standards for both students and teachers because it provides a level of consistency across for educators and students. This also provides a mentality of accelerating student learning for the "21st century student" as technology continues to keep evolving in our students' world, and will continue to evolve into their future. Lastly, the ISTE Standards are also a great resource to have when planning and collaborating with other educators in order to ensure that lessons and school work are using technology that is purposeful and allow for students to be creative in their learning, as well as making sure the students' needs are being met.

The ISTE standards I feel confident in are both the role of the Collaborator and the role of the Analyst. In my role, being an SST, it is important for me to always collaborate with my colleagues to ensure that my IEP students are being set up for success across all learning environments. I also feel confident in my role as an Analyst. The Special Education world is all data-driven, so I feel I am strong in collecting data on my students, and using that data to drive instruction. However, I feel I could strengthen my ability to drive this instruction using more technology that would benefit and be purposeful in their learning.

Students and teachers need the ISTE Standards to be held accountable for the skills they are being asked to demonstrate as well as the skills they are being asked to facilitate. Without these guidelines, there would be a lack of consistency in our 21st century world that is constantly changing. These standards ensure that we are meeting students where they are at, holding them accountable, and providing a purpose behind the tasks we are asking of them as educators as we are being asking to complete specific tasks. These standards help me reflect on what I am asking of my students and HOW. I think this is the important part because it allows room for that creativity in the classroom.

However, we need specific guidelines for what that looks like and the ISTE standards lay that out nicely for students and teachers.

It is important for ISTE to have student and teacher standards because technology has to be used and understood by all in different capacities in order for it to be used effectively in the classroom. Teachers need to be comfortable and confident with the technology that their students are using, as well as the teacher side of the technology. Additionally, teachers really need to understand the technology and the purpose behind it to evaluate if it is a useful tool for their students, or something that could be taught in a better way. For all of these reasons, it is essential for teachers to have tech standards. Additionally, students need to have tech standards because technology is becoming an increasingly important facet of life, both personally and professionally. Students will need technology skills in order to be successful in college and in the workplace, as well as skills on how to use tech in their daily life. So things like digital citizenship, teaching students how to troubleshoot problems, use digital media, problem solve, and find reliable information on the internet will all be essential skills they must be taught.

The Educator Standard that I am developing in is the role of Citizen. I teach digital citizenship at the beginning of the year, and I teach students to not plagiarize, etc. however I do not feel that I am always doing an effective job at teaching those concepts. Additionally, there are other concepts dealing with citizenship that I am overlooking completely. For example, when doing research I ask students to cite their sources, use quotations when taking direct quotes, and to write in their own words when not taking direct quotes, however I don't do a great job of enforcing this, which leads to students not always following those guidelines. Additionally, teaching students to manage their data safely is something that I believe in, and believe students should take seriously, but rarely devote the time necessary to ensure that data isn't being tracked for my students on the websites I send them to, nor to have students make choices on how their data is handled etc. Usually I feel so crunched for time in my own curriculum that I brush past those types of topics in lieu of more work time for my content area.

It is important to have the ISTE standards because it is a way to hold all educators and students accountable for providing and receiving skills that allow all to function and participate in a 21st century world. These standards hold students and teachers to high standards of learning and as the article says "requires students to take an active role in their education." Technology is everchanging so we must adjust our teaching to ensure we are setting all students up for success to be active members of society in all facets.

This is especially true for technology. I am always seeking out ways to allow my students to take ownership of their learning, and I think this could be enhanced through innovative and purposeful uses of technology in the classroom. I just feel I have not mastered this yet!

I feel that it is important to have ISTE Standards for both Students and Teachers because it gives teachers goals of things we need to strive to achieve for ourselves and our students. I noticed a few of the standards are the same for students and teachers: learner, citizen, and designer. I think it's wonderful that current students are able to learn so much about technology at school. I have had to learn most of what I know just by doing it myself, asking colleagues and taking professional development classes. We are so lucky that our district provides such amazing classes to keep us up to date on current technology trends.

I am working on developing more in the area of Designer. I am ok at it and I do design instructional activities and assessments with my PLC but this is an area where I definitely will be more confident with more practice. There is so much to consider when designing learning material. Just getting the content and differentiation down is one task and then creating the lesson or assessment using various digital tools is another task all together! I got really good at Seesaw because we used it so much the past couple years. I know I can learn; it just takes exposure, time and practice!

Of the 7 ISTE Standards for Teachers, I feel most confident as a learner. I love learning new things and I am constantly setting goals for myself personally and professionally. Sometimes learning new things can be scary on my own, so I prefer to learn with others and from a teacher. I am really trying to learn as much as I can so I can provide the best education I can for my students.

Ever since the pandemic, educators have had to rely heavily on technology to teach their students. Even though we are now headed in the right direction, technology is still important. Students are easily engaged and it pushes teachers to become more creative and innovative educators for our students.

If all educators follow the same technology standards, then planning lessons with other educators ill be more streamlined, and students in the school will have more consistent lessons across different teachers. Finally, these standards are also important because they help educators make sure that students have all of the skills to make them 21st Century Learners.
