Alfreds fear is his hunter in this book. I think that he is scared of having no purpose so he does everything he can to help and try’s to act important. When Florian asks for Alfreds help he thinks he is helping with a Nazi severest mission and agrees. Alfred is a pawn in the book that is used to ensure their passage.

Comprehension Q: What differences exist between Alfred in real life vs. his head?

The main difference between the “two Alfreds” is in his head/ letters he thinks he is a really important solider who is helping a good cause and in real life he is a fearful, unintelligent boy who ends up getting used.

Eva had to find her luggage because her whole life was there. That seems ironic to me because she could lose her life by not getting a ticket on the ship to safety (even if it does sink, but no one knows that yet). This shows more of her character too. She is selfish, but in the end it ends up saving her.

Analysis Q: contrast Emilia in the beginning of the book to now.

I would say she is less shy and helpless. In the beginning she was a scared girl that couldn’t help herself. After Florian saved her she became “attached” and felt the need to repay him. Since then she has become more comfortable with the group and she is trying to protect her baby.

Synthesis Q: What would you predict from Emilias chapters and thoughts? Do you think her baby will arrive safely?

The first time I read this I thought Emilia was weak. The second time I read it I realized how strong she is from being sent to a farm to getting raped and impregnated. She still through it all tries to protect her baby. I know that her baby arrives safely, but I would’ve predicted that she miscarried or that they found out she wasn’t who she said she was and took the baby away.

Since I already read the book I can’t make a prediction really.. I do say I was surprised with the ending and was happy and sad at the same time. I love how Emilia fought to the end (against Alfred) and technically won. She stood up for herself which shows how much she grew. I would’ve never expected that Florian and Joana would both make it. I just thought it would be a more sad ending. I did expect the shoe poet to die though which was sad.
