I got woken at 5:23 and immediately started our drills i was still very tired when I woke because I have been awake all night scared about how then war would be. I've been in many fights but this one would surely be the craziest on yet. Our morning drills consisted of marching 13 miles, we usually do 15 or maybe even 20 on regular days but this is definitely not a regular day. Like always breakfast was the worst, we got the smallest amounts of food but the worst of all was that the men are so used to their wives cooking for them back at home now they don't know how to cook their own food here. We all got a piece of meat, a potato, a chunk of bread, and a cup of coffee with brown sugar in it. I needed to use the bathroom so the only way I wouldn't get caught was by going out into the woods. I walked out deep enough to a comfortable place and started to use the bathroom. I heard a stick crack from a step of a foot and without hesitation got up and turned around as if I was using the bathroom as a man. One of the soldiers stepped out from the trees and asked me why I wasn't just using the outhouse and I had to tell him that I really needed to go and the nearest one was occupied. I was almost caught, next time i'll just go deeper into the woods. I went back to base and everyone was getting ready to go to Gettysburg. We loaded the trucks, and some walked. We were all ready for the biggest battle of the Civil War.

We all got ready to walk and started off to Gettysburg. The walk was about 35 minutes from where we were at. The Confederates were camping in Gettysburg so i'm sure they were ready for us. I'm really scared but there's sparks of adrenaline running through my blood. I was kind of near the end of the group so the people in front of us already made it to the Confederates. I started to hear loud gunshots ahead of me and as soon as I saw a Confederate I knew that the war had definitely started. I ran to hide behind a rock and looked down and saw one of the guys that slept in the tent next to mine with his arm ripped off. A tear dripped down my face, I was sick to my stomach. I looked over the huge rock to see if anybody was there and I saw nobody so I started to move up. I saw a confederate doing the same thing I was doing, hiding. He was crying, he looked like he maybe was 18. I felt horrible although we were not fight for the same thing, I had sympathy, he was still a human. I treat everyone as if they were my loved ones, I treat everyone equally, that's one of the main reasons I decided to risk my life and come join the way. I stared at the crying young boy. He turned his head and I locked eyes with him. He was scared out of his mind, he knew something was going to happen. He shook his head and immedietly everything stopped, I didn't want to kill the boy. This was going to be about the hardest decision of my life. I snapped out of it when a soldier tapped me on the arm and yelled, "What are you waiting for? Shoot him!" Another tear rolled down my face as I lifted my gun to shoot him. It took me a long time until i pulled the trigger. As soon as I shot him I fell to my knees and started to cry. I knew that I wouldn't act like this again. I didn't kill anybody the rest of the battle. When everything was over that night I walked around all the dead bodies of my fellow soldiers, they were getting put inside of body bags and placed inside a covered wagon. We walked back to the camp and everyone got ready to go to sleep. I hated the nights, sleeping was so uncomfortable for me. We slept on the ground inside tents and it was horrible. I was scared for war tomorrow, I didn't know what to expect, I could die. I went to sleep shaking.
