There are traps that are hidden in stairs. The traps are hidden under or buried in the stairs and when enemy soldiers walk in the soldiers will come in contact with a nail. A nail that digs into the floor of the stairs and comes in contact with a mine exploding. This trap was set up when German soldiers were retreating to kill allied forces. This was used by the 77th Division at Camp Upton in the early 1918. This artifact is important to show readers how traps were to be used.

Ruses and Snares
https://www.theworldwar.org/explore/collections/spotlight/ruse#:~:text=The%20traps%20were%20clever%20and,of%20detonators%20which%20fire%20explosives.%E2%80%9D

While retreating the Germans of the 77th division buried hand grenades. Hand grenades were buried in the ground while being connected by wire. It was telephone wire and once the wire was touched the hand grenades would near instantaneously blow up. The Germans set up this trap as well as multiple others while retreating between Artois and the Aisne in the early 1918. This artifact was important because this showed the different methods of setting up or different types of traps.

Ruses and Snares
https://www.theworldwar.org/explore/collections/spotlight/ruse#:~:text=The%20traps%20were%20clever%20and,of%20detonators%20which%20fire%20explosives.%E2%80%9D

IEDs are "improvised explosive devices".
When Germans were retreating they had left some bombs for the US to be blown up by in October of 1918. Germans had buried 10 artillery shells underneath the dugout attached to a temperature switch because they suspected that the US soldiers were going to occupy the dugout. The temperature switch was under some cot. The Germans thought the US was going to occupy there since there were no houses nearby. This explains how sophisticated the traps can be.

BOOBY TRAP IEDS ON THE BATTLEFIELD - 1918
https://www.standingwellback.com/booby-trap-ieds-on-the-battlefield-1918/

Infernal machines are "Artillery shells with trigger fuses".
There was a house in 1916 with a German piano in it. A soldier was walking up to the piano with the intention to play it. But fortunately was warned by an officer that striking a certain key will trigger the infernal machine causing the house and everything in it to be reduced to flames and ash. This reveals to readers that bombs can come in many ways.

BOOBY TRAP IEDS ON THE BATTLEFIELD - 1918
https://www.standingwellback.com/booby-trap-ieds-on-the-battlefield-1918/

Once when Germans were retreating once again they had left behind a trap. When the advancing Allied forces came in and occupied the house they were resting. Once one soldier laid down on the bed the bed exploded. This specific type of trap may have been repeated multiple times after this. And even more shows how bombs can come in many ways.

BOOBY TRAP IEDS ON THE BATTLEFIELD - 1918
https://www.standingwellback.com/booby-trap-ieds-on-the-battlefield-1918/
