"You start off easily enough: What is Guatemala? It's mixtas, it's rellenitos, it's shecas. It's tiendas selling tipica and Hastily- painted souvenirs That you'll treasure for the next decade."(Coyoy pg.1). "It's conversations over dinner about family virtues, views, and values not quite k'iche' Not something the sociologist- anthropologist- tourist can easily catalogue in their guidebook." (Coyote pg.1). I selected these statements because it’s true how cultural experiences and family traditions are very sacred, and it's hard to explain your feelings when doing them; just imagine how people who know nothing of your culture try to document and say what they think.

"It has been said that pain does not know how to pose for a green card picture. It has been said that truth has the ability to happen in the strangest of moments, in the strangest of cities, under the strangest of circumstances" (Aviles, 2).

This passage stood out to me in the "El Salvador at a Glance" by Quique Aviles because it honestly struck me silent. I didn't exactly know how to react to this saying because others go through sufferings not many of us even know even know about. It's very true of the troubles some had to go through to get to where they are now. Many individuals have their stories on how they got to where they are, we, as a community, should be open to these stories. Helping those feel more comfortable talking about where they're from.

What I know of Guatemala isn’t from firsthand experiences but rather hearing three different generations worth of stories. From those stories I learned about what life was like from three different generations and how they grew to love the country they came from and that love they had became the love I have. The pride and love I feel for Guatemala I feel is the one that has been crafted from three different generations worth of perspectives. That's why I can't really explain where Guatemala is or better yet what it really is

"How can you give them a sense of a place, a feeling - a memory, really ... It's conversations over dinner about family virtues, views, and values" (Coyoy). These particular sections of the poem stood out to me because I think that some places can not only be described by the way they look but also be described by the traditions, culture, and how it makes people connect and feel that they are part of the community. This brings up the idea of what is the difference between a "house" and a "home". House is basically described on the appearance and what it is where home is described through personal and emotional attachments based on tradition, culture, and memories.

"...a corpse rolls, a thing without

name, a discarded number,

a bunch of rotten fruit

thrown on the garbage heap" (Neruda 1). I feel as if the imagery and meaning here is so powerful, because a corpse is considered a number in statistics which is usually what everyone looks at rather than the individual who has actually become a corpse. What makes it more powerful is the second part where the corpses are referred to as "rotten fruit thrown on the garbage heap", which makes it so much darker and accurately symbolizes what happened. All in all, it is a sad but powerful poem and these lines sold me on it.

"It has been said that pain does not know how to pose for a green card picture" (Aviles 2) I picked this line because it really stood out to me. It shows how pain and struggle don’t always fit neatly into official processes like immigration. It’s a creative way of saying that people’s hardships can be invisible or ignored. It made me think about how many carry unseen struggles that others might not notice.

"...Not something sociologist-anthropologist- tourist can easily catalogue on their guide book" (Mullen-Coyo)... overall i believe it emphasizes on the effects of tourism based on biased/ uninformative guidebooks, which simply overlook culture. Making it harder to understand traditions and cultural aspects of what makes Guatemala, Guatemala. The dishes, family time, values, virtue… simply their costumes carried throat generations. Not just a simple troutsit country, or something that can be depicted by a guidebook. Which solely just creates a facade of who Gueslamala is really represented by. Leading to Guatemala being depicted the way they dont want to.. Affecting both tourists and the country.

“Ubico flies, flies sticky with submissive blood and marmalade, drunken flies that buzz over the tombs of the people, circus flies, wise flies expert at tyranny.”

I chose this passage because it really portrays these corrupt leaders and how they thrive on the misery of their innocent people. “Ubico flies” connects to real life leaders who, like many today, focus first on their own power and interests over the well-being being of their people. The imagery of the “drunken flies” buzzing over the tombs of people shows how corruption exploits and thrives off of the suffering and death of ordinary people. It is important for us to understand how these leaders work in order to know what to do to have a better future.
