Rosa Parks, an African-American woman who became one of the major symbols of the Civil Rights Movement (CNN, 2016). Rosa had grown up in Alabama and was also called as the first lady of civil rights.

She owes this title to a historic action in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger in the bus. She decided to sit in the bus section of the ‘white folks’. In Montgomery, African-Americans were obliged to give their seat to white people. However, Rosa refused and felt that she had as many rights to sit on that seat as a white passenger. Rosa wanted to make a statement against the segregation of whites and blacks and was arrested.

Due to this case, African-American people boycotted public transportation in order to support Rosa’s arrest. This boycott lasted 381 days. In 1956 the US Supreme Court decided that racial segregation in buses was abolished. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was one of the most successful movement regarding racial segregation in the American history.

Afterwards, Rosa received many accolades, such as the NAACP’s highest award and President Bill Clinton gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest honour given by the US executive branch. Rosa Parks has left a great historical impression and died in 2005 (Biography, n.d.).

Biography. (n.d.). Rosa Parks.
The American Dream

The American dream is a popular and hopeful term that is highly praised by all Americans. According to the dictionary (www.dictionary.com), the American dream is defined as the ideals of freedom, equality and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American.

The Declaration of Independence makes it able to achieve the American Dream. However, the declaration was only extended to white men property-owners. Afterwards the declaration changed, and everyone was seen created equally and should be recognized by others for their achievements, such as women and slaves (The Balance & Ambarleo, 2017).

James Truslow Adams founded the term ‘American Dream’ and he used this in his book ‘The Epic of America’ which was published in 1931. During that time there was the Great Depression which has a huge impact on the lives of many Americans. In reality, the American dream gives everyone the opportunity, freedom and equality to become a successful millionaire, despite their social-economic background, race and gender. The ideal that everyone who works hard enough can achieve everything what they want, and that America is the country of unlimited opportunities.

To give an example of someone who successfully achieved the American dream is Jay Z. He had grown up in the poorest area in Brooklyn and even sold CD’s out of his car to be recognized and earn money. No record label would sign him, so he created his own independent label Roc-A-Fella Record. This has ultimately led to a great success and he is now one of the most financially and successful artist and entrepreneurs in the US.

Also, millions of immigrants have gone to the US with the vision to pursue their American dream. America is also known as the country of immigration which made the country a melting pot. However, there are still many people who failed to achieve their American dream and it is by many underestimated. The American dream can not just be reached, but if you work hard enough and you follow your passion, you might succeed.

The Balance, & Ambarleo, K. (2017, September 15).
