The moral approach in Bao is the family values of the mother wanting to keep her child safe with her. Watching her child grow up so fast left a mark. The son came back at the end, showing that you still need family after your childhood.

The mother thought that it was her duty to protect her child from harm's way and thought that the best way to accomplish this was for him to stay close to her even if it destroyed his happiness. She learned through her troubles with her son that she had let him grow on his own.

In the short film Bao, the food was a cultural symbol of the mother and son/dumpling's relationship throughout the piece. The jelly biscuit at the beginning showed their bond. The biscuit in the middle demonstrates their lack of connection. At the end, the biscuit brings the mother and son back together and gives the viewer a sense of closure.

Food is a large part of the Chinese culture. The mom in the film is skilled at making perfect dumplings, and in her dream the perfect literal dumplings are a symbol to her son, whom she wants to be perfect. As she senses that she is losing her son, she cooks traditional Chinese foods to try to sustain their connection. At the end, her son comes back home and she realizes he doesn't have to be perfect, and then she teaches him and his wife how to make Chinese foods (dumplings).

The bunny starts the film in an anxious and neurotic state. The mere presence of other animals sends her into a frenzy. She must of suffered neglect of some sort in childhood or had a traumatic event occur to make her so secluded. Thankfully, the animals treat her with kindness and helpfulness which helps the bunny overcome her anxiety and gain a sense of community and confidence.

In Burrow, the bunny has to make a decision whether or not it wants rely on others and ask for help or go to the extreme to make its dream a reality. The bunny places an emphasis on independence; however, it quickly realizes that being too independent is not always a good option. The characters all help the bunny to learn that trust and friendship is the key to success.

The rabbit is embarrassed that all the other animals' plans were so big, but he did not want to ask for help. He decided to do everything himself, but realized that its too big of a challenge. When the other animals came to help him after the water burst out, he realized the importance of teamwork in making his dreams come true.

The mailbox symbolizes the bunny's mental state. When initially starting the build on the burrow, the mailbox topples over without the bunny seeing showing that they don't realize the gravity of their problem and that it is actually a problem. In the end when the bunny nails the mailbox back in it falls again. The bunny notices this time and nails it back in once more, symbolizes their growth from asking others for help.
