People believed this because it seems that the sun rotates across the sky every day, but the earth is actually rotating that is why we see it every day. This idea was accepted starting in the 2nd century all the way until the late 16th and early 17th century when it was fully discovered by new astronomers, including Brahe. He was defunded and went to work on changing the Alfonsine Tables using his model under the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II in Prague. He collapsed mysteriously before finishing this work. His body was recently dug up and there were traces of mercury found that may suggest he was poisoned.
