         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 2020–21, the number of students ages 3–21 who received special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was 7.2 million, this is the 15 percent of all public school students.&nbsp;<br>Among students receiving special education services, the most common category of disability was specific learning disabilities (33 percent).<br><br></div><ol><li>At least 1 in every 59 children has one or several learning disabilities.</li><li>1 in 5 children in the U.S. have learning and thinking differences such as ADHD or <a href="http://www.crossrivertherapy.com/research/dyslexia-statistics">Dyslexia</a>.</li><li>As of 2021, 2.8 million kids are actively getting services involving special education.</li><li>4 million children younger than 18 have learning disabilities in the United States.</li><li>Children with learning disabilities account for 47% of the total amount of them receiving special education.</li><li>Kids with learning conditions have a 31% greater chance of being bullied than kids with no disabilities.</li><li>Boys account for about 66% of children with a learning disability diagnosis.</li><li>Over 18% of learning-disabled kids drop out of school.</li><li>The three most common learning disabilities found in American children are ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia.</li></ol><div><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

The U.S. Department of Education mentions specific other&nbsp; disorders or conditions that may, in combination with other factors, qualify a child for services under IDEA.<br><br>Other health impairment means having limited strength, vitality, or alertness, including a heightened alertness to environmental stimuli, that results in limited alertness with respect to the educational environment, that—</div><div><a href="https://sites.ed.gov/idea/regs/b/a/300.8/c/9/i">(i)</a> Is due to chronic or acute health problems such as asthma, attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diabetes, epilepsy, a heart condition, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, sickle cell anemia, and Tourette syndrome; and</div><div><a href="https://sites.ed.gov/idea/regs/b/a/300.8/c/9/ii">(ii)</a> Adversely affects a child’s educational performance.</div><div><br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><strong>Neurological Dysfunction: </strong>anatomical differences and imbalances in brain chemistry.</li><li><strong>Envirnmental Factors:</strong></li><li>Consumption of drugs and alcohol during pregnancy</li><li>Premature birth</li><li>Low birthweight</li><li>Exposure to toxic environmental metals (e.g., lead, mercury)</li><li>Nutrient deficiency in diet</li><li>Hostile early childhood experiences like familial conflict or poverty.</li><li><strong>Heredity:</strong> ADD and ADHD tend to run in families.</li></ul><div>ADHD has a high heritability, which means if a parent has been diagnosed with ADHD, it is highly likely that their child would have ADHD as well. Thus, genetics have long been linked to being a risk factor for ADHD. Genetic studies have found that the interaction of more than one gene could be contributing towards the development of ADHD.</div><ul><li><strong>Chemical Imbalances</strong></li><li><strong>Neo-Natal Activities:</strong> Maternal smoking, drug use, and pre-maturity all increase the risk.</li><li><strong>Altered Brain Function:</strong> Brain scans reveal differences in the structure and brain activity.</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

This number includes<ul><li>3–5 years: 265,000 (2%)</li><li>6–11 years 2.4 million (10%)</li><li>12–17 years: 3.3 million (13%).</li></ul></li><li>Boys (13%) are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls (6%).</li><li>Black, non-Hispanic children and White, non-Hispanic children are more often diagnosed with ADHD (12% and 10%, respectively), than Hispanic children (8%) or Asian, non-Hispanic children (3%).</li><li>Estimates for ADHD vary by state:&nbsp;</li><li>ADHD diagnosis among children aged 3–17 years: State estimates vary from 6% to 16%.</li><li>Any ADHD treatment among children with current ADHD: State estimates vary from 58% to 92%</li><li>ADHD medication: State estimates vary from 38% to 81%</li><li>ADHD behavior treatment: State estimates vary from 39% to 62%</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>DSM-5 Criteria for ADHD</div><div>People with ADHD show a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity–impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development:</div><ul><li>Inattention: Six or more symptoms of inattention for children up to age 16 years, or five or more for adolescents age 17 years and older and adults; symptoms of inattention have been present for at least 6 months, and they are inappropriate for developmental level:</li></ul><ol><li>Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, at work, or with other activities.</li><li>Often has trouble holding attention on tasks or play activities.</li><li>Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly.</li><li>Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (e.g., loses focus, side-tracked).</li><li>Often has trouble organizing tasks and activities.</li><li>Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to do tasks that require mental effort over a long period of time (such as schoolwork or homework).</li><li>Often loses things necessary for tasks and activities (e.g. school materials, pencils, books, tools, wallets, keys, paperwork, eyeglasses, mobile telephones).</li><li>Is often easily distracted</li><li>Is often forgetful in daily activities.</li></ol><div><strong>Hyperactivity and Impulsivity: Six or more symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity for children up to age 16 years, or five or more for adolescents age 17 years and older and adults; symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity have been present for at least 6 months to an extent that is disruptive and inappropriate for the person’s developmental level:</strong></div><ol><li>Often fidgets with or taps hands or feet, or squirms in seat.</li><li>Often leaves seat in situations when remaining seated is expected.</li><li>Often runs about or climbs in situations where it is not appropriate (adolescents or adults may be limited to feeling restless).</li><li>Often unable to play or take part in leisure activities quietly.</li><li>Is often “on the go” acting as if “driven by a motor”.</li><li>Often talks excessively.</li><li>Often blurts out an answer before a question has been completed.</li><li>Often has trouble waiting their turn.</li><li>Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games)</li></ol><div>In addition, the following conditions must be met:</div><ul><li>Several inattentive or hyperactive-impulsive symptoms were present before age 12 years.</li><li>Several symptoms are present in two or more settings, (such as at home, school or work; with friends or relatives; in other activities).</li><li>There is clear evidence that the symptoms interfere with, or reduce the quality of, social, school, or work functioning.</li><li>The symptoms are not better explained by another mental disorder (such as a mood disorder, anxiety disorder, dissociative disorder, or a personality disorder). The symptoms do not happen only during the course of schizophrenia or another psychotic disorder.</li></ul><div>Based on the types of symptoms, three kinds (presentations) of ADHD can occur:</div><ul><li>Combined Presentation: if enough symptoms of both criteria inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity were present for the past 6 months</li><li>Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: if enough symptoms of inattention, but not hyperactivity-impulsivity, were present for the past six months</li><li>Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: if enough symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity, but not inattention, were present for the past six months.</li></ul><div>Because symptoms can change over time, the presentation may change over time as well.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Children with ADD/ADHD are capable of appropriate classroom behavior, but they need structure and clear expectations in order to keep their symptoms in check.&nbsp;</li><li>Implemenet a behavior plan if necessary</li><li>Extra time on tests</li><li>Flexible seating</li><li>Instruction and assignments tailored to the child</li><li>Divide big assignments into smaller ones, and allow children frequent breaks.</li><li>Write important information down where the child can easily read and reference it.&nbsp;</li><li>Remind the student where the information is located.</li><li>Positive reinforcement and feedback</li><li>Give consequences immediately following misbehavior. Certain genes may increase your risk of developing a mental illness, and your life situation may trigger it.</li><li><strong>Environmental exposures before birth.</strong> Exposure to environmental stressors, inflammatory conditions, toxins, alcohol or drugs while in the womb can sometimes be linked to mental illness.</li><li><strong>Brain chemistry.</strong> Neurotransmitters are naturally occurring brain chemicals that carry signals to other parts of your brain and body. Minimize the possibility that students at high risk will engage in misbehavior.</div><div><strong>Tertiary Prevention: <br></strong>the most intensive level of prevention, designed for individual students: individual counseling, individually tailored self monitoring program spreserve functional adaptations and the wellbeing of the person,as well as to avoid relapses<strong>.</strong></div>]]></description>
