I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike,
I am not cruel, only truthful--
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Now I am a lake. A women bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her bac, and then reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old women
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

This poem was written between the time periods of CONTEMPORARY and MODERNISM. During these time periods poets often focused on their FLOW OF THOUGHTS and CONSCIOUSNESS by CHALLENGING SOCIETY and IMAGISM. The underlying message of this poem is self reflection. In this poem, the mirror forces the woman to face her true self image and look into her true feelings. PERSONIFICATION is used in this poem by giving the mirror human characteristics to help get the theme across.
http://penandthepad.com/overall-meaning-poem-mirror-19098.html

"We wear the mask was written during the Civil War time period. During this time period poets often focused on FREEDOM, PATRIOTISM, AND REALIZATION OF SLAVERY. The underlying message of this particular poem is people hide their true feelings by putting up a fake front. Particularly in this poem, Dunbar is taking from the SLAVE EXPERIENCE and the emotional affect it had and continue to have on African Americans during this time period. REPETITION and RHYME SCHEME are used throughout the poem to help create the tone of the poem.
http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps/poets/a_f/dunbar/mask.htm
