Bravery is a key factor in opposing one's government because if you don't have guts, you can't do much in the way of changing anything in you're society. In the movie 'Swing Kids', main character Peter demonstrates many acts of bravery, such as stealing a radio from a shop, and even letting himself be carted away to a concentration camp because he knew it was for a greater cause. The Swing Kids in Nazi Germany showed that trait when they resisted the Nazi's and their group became stronger due to how popular it was for the youth. Even when you know the consequences of your actions you must be brave enough to never back down. You have to look the powerful authorities in their faces and outright tell them that you will not do what they want you to do. During the Third Reich, the Swing Kids refused to join Hitler Youth Groups and the military. The clubs kept playing Swing music and holding dances even when the people attending knew that if they were caught they would be sent to Concentration Camps. They kept strong to their rebellious beliefs because they firmly believed in the cause that they stood for. That is where the passion comes in. Thomas, Peter, and Arvid all had a huge passion for dancing and music in the beginning of the film. Passion is what made people see through with their resistance and stick to their beliefs that the Nazi's ideas were not right. People in the Swing Movement loved dance and were able to express this through their resistance. Determination is what separated the people who joined the HJ when threatened, and the people who kept doing what they loved. You cannot have a successful resistance if you are not able to stick to what you stand for. Peter was determined to stay a Swing Kid even after being forced to join the HJ. On the other hand, Thomas was not able to keep his passion and slowly began to drift away and became someone who went against the resistance. Peter let the Nazis take him away when they busted the Swing club because he was tired of running and was determined to stick with the resistance. Unfortunately, not everyone could be like Peter and that is why situations like Thomas happened. The participants of such a movement must have a particular fire for what they are rebelling for, their devotion to their cause must be absolute no matter what consequences are threatened. The best resistances have something to motivate them--something powerful to stand behind (that may or may not be legal), that gives them an intense amount of strength and a certain binding to their cause. Anything can become the face of a rebellion if enough people stand behind it and use such a thing to break away from the "norm" of society. In Nazi Germany, the Swing Kids used jazz music as the face of their rebellion. They frequented their jazz clubs nightly, showing their devotion to their cause, but it wasn't just devotion that motivated them. Many genuinely enjoyed taking part in swing parties, since it allowed them an outlet for self-expression which was completely unallowed in Nazi Germany for the most part. A rebellion also must not die even when it is threatened. When the Swing Kids were taken to labor camps, they still played their music using whatever they could find. In order to resist a government many qualities and characteristics are required. First, you must have something you really do not like that the government is doing. As well as a strong feeling that you can help fix this issue. In order to be effective, you have to  have enough support to force the government to fix this problem. Also you need to be willing to be punished for your resistance, so strong feelings are required. In 1935-1936 the swing kids were truly formed. In order to be a true swing kid it took a different mentality that many kids did not have. It took the will to ignore the law, be your own person aside from the Nazis, be cool and laid back without letting the lifestyle be fazed by the Nazi life. Along with the type of person it took, you also had to be willing to go to a "camp" if caught. Swing dancing was very illegal at the time and many people would be arrested for swing dancing and/or listening to swing music. By saying that the swing kids had to be willing to go to a camp meant that they had to be willing to give up their whole life at any moment in order to live the swing life. Another thing that i learned from the film is that you cannot run a successful swing club when you have "impostors". In my mind i see Thomas as a sort of impostor towards the swing clubs. He went from being a swing kid to being a true HJ. In my opinion i believe that he gave up the sport of the club, therefore giving up many dancers to the police. In order to be a true Swing kid it takes a special mentality that not many people have. The swing kids knew just that and did not care because of their passion for the music and hatred for the Nazis. Swing was a type of jazz dance and music that originated in the US and spread to Germany around 1935. Hitler did not like the idea of this new fad spreading so he made the music illegal in Nazi Germany. That did not stop the swing boys. People found secret ways to have their swing records and organized events were everyone that loved swing would go and sing and dance to it all night. As mentioned earlier, following the swing lifestyle was a huge risk. Many people caught doing these things were beaten and brought to concentration camps for two to three years where they worked and were treated horribly. For the younger swing followers they were brought to detention camps. The HJ were the people that the swing kids had to look out for. Resisting the Nazis was a hard thing to do and took passion and bravery to go against the strict norm. In the movie Swing Kids, the character Thomas who was a all about the swing lifestyle, had to join the HJ and this completely changed him and turned him against his friends and swing community. He was overtaken by the Nazi way and struggled to continue to resist the laws and power the Nazis had. They did not like what Hitler stood for but they did not want to rebel against him because of the fear of what would be done to them. One group of people rebelled against the Germans and did not care about the consequences. The answer was swing dancing. Swing dancing was a new type of jazz music and it originated in America so it had obviously been banned from Germany. Swing kids would meet in clubs in Germany and dance to swing. This was a very dangerous situation because if the Nazis found out they would raid the cafe and beat up everyone in it. People would be lucky if they escaped because if they did not then they would be sent to a work camp. In the work camps the conditions were normal and most of them died as a result of the horrific conditions.The swing boys were very brave for what they did. Nobody else would stand up to Hitler so they did. The swing kids were a group of people that loved to listen to Jazz and swing music. The music originated from the U.S and then spread to Germany.  The kids would meet at clubs in Germany and dance to swing music. The Nazis were very against it and if they found out that they were dancing then the Nazis would invade the clubs and beat them up and force them to get out. Some people were able to escape, but some were not luckey enough to. The people that were caught were often sent to camps to work. The camps were not in very good condition, most of the people died because of the terrible conditions. The necessary qualities that are needed to really resist a government that the swing kids had and did were like believing other then what you are told to believe. What the kids in Germany were told and brainwashed to believe in did not effect many kids like shown in the film. Some ways you could tell the kids were resisting were like they listened to swing music even though they knew it was illegal. They even went to secret swing clubs to dance and rebel in there own way. The German kids in the film had many quality's that let them resist the government.
