1. Background
~First Muslim nurse.
~Full name:Rufaidah bint Sa'ad of the Bani Aslam tribe of the Khazraj tribal confederation in Madinah.
~Born in Yathrib before the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
~Among the first people in Madina to accept Islam and was one of the Ansar women who welcomed the Prophet on arrival in Madina.

~Rufaidah's father was a physician. She learned medical care by working as his assistant.
2. Contribution
~When the Islamic state was well established in Madina, Rufaidah devoted herself to nursing the Muslim sick. In peace time she set up a tent outside the Prophet's mosque in Madina where she nursed the sick.
~During war she led groups of volunteer nurses who went to the battlefield and treated the casualties. She participated in the battles of Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, Khaibar, and others.
~She also trained a group of women companions as nurses. When the Prophet's army was getting ready to go to the battle of Khaibar, Rufaidah and the group of volunteer nurses went to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
~Plus, involved in social work in the community. She came to the assistance of every Muslim in need: the poor, the orphans, or the handicapped. She looked after the orphans, nursed them, and taught them.

-Hunayn ibn Ishaq al-Ibadi
-originally from Iraq but spent his working life in Baghdad
-translator, scholar, physician, and scientist
-mastered four languages: Arabic, Syriac, Greek and Persian

2) Contribution
Hunayn ibn Ishaq's reputation as a scholar and translator, and his close relationship with Caliph al-Mutawakkil, led the caliph to name Hunayn as his personal physician. Despite their relationship, at the time, there were fears of death from poisoning, and physicians were well aware of its synthesis procedure. The caliph asked him to formulate a poison, to be used against a foe, in exchange for a large sum. Hunayn repeatedly rejected the offers, saying he would rather be killed than make a drug. The caliph imprisoned him for a year. When asked why he would rather be killed than make the drug, Hunayn explained the physician's oath required him to help, and not harm, his patients. He completed many different medical works that pushed the idea of treating medicine with the practice and art of physic treatments.

Hunayn ibn Ishaq enriched the field of ophthalmology. His developments in the study of the human eye can be traced through his innovative book, "Book of the Ten Treatises of the Eye". This textbook is the first known systematic treatment of this field and was most likely used in medical schools at the time.

Linda Richards

1. Background
-Full name: Malinda Ann Judson Richards
-Born on July 27. 1841 in West Potsdam, New York.
-First professionally trained American
-She established nursing training programs in the United States and Japan.
-Created the first system for keeping individual medical records for hospitalized patients.

2. Contribution
-The New York City gave Richards the opportunity to prove her worth in the profession, being able to develop the system of keeping records of each patient at the Bellevue Hospital. Significantly, her concept was widely integrated in the U.S. and England, including Florence Nightingale's St. Thomas Hospital.

-She, later on, furthered her nurse training. She also went to King's College Hospital and Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in Scotland for added training and education.

-In 1874, Richards came to be the superintendent of Boston Training School who turned the then dying nurse-training program into one of America's best, with all the nursing knowledge that she brought with her when she came back in 1877. After 9 years, Richards had gone off to Japan where she opened Japan's first nurse's training school in Kyoto during her 5-year missionary service there.

-At the age of 51, Linda Richards went back to the U.S. and held leadership roles in the Philadelphia Visiting Nurse Society and as the superintendent of 2 other training schools.
-In 1892, Richards was also able to establish a training school at the Philadelphia Methodist Episcopal Hospital and reorganized the nursing training program in the New England Hospital for Women and Children from 1893 to 1894.

-She also served as president of the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools, member of the Hospital Economics Program Committee at the Teacher's College, Columbia University, director of training schools at the Taunton Insane Hospital in Massachusetts, Worchester Hospital for the Insane, and Michigan Insane Asylum.

-Her nursing and teaching career ended in her retirement in 1911. On April 16, 1930, at the age of 88, Linda Richards died. In 1976, Richards became ANA Hall of Fame Inductee.

IBN ISHAQ AL-KINDI

was an Arab Muslim philosopher, polymath, mathematician, physician and musician
Full name: Abu Yūsuf Yaʻqūb ibn ʼIsḥāq aṣ-Ṣabbāḥ al-Kindī
Was born in Kufa and educated in Baghdad.

CONTRIBUTION:

He subsequently wrote hundreds of original treatises of his own on a range of subjects ranging from metaphysics, ethics, logic and psychology, to medicine, pharmacology, mathematics, astronomy, astrology and optics, and further afield to more practical topics like perfumes, swords, jewels, glass, dyes, zoology, tides, mirrors, meteorology and earthquakes.
In the field of mathematics, al-Kindi played an important role in introducing Indian numerals to the Islamic world, and subsequently, relabeled as Arabic numerals, to the Christian world, along with Al-Khwarizmi
Using his mathematical and medical expertise, he was able to develop a scale that would allow doctors to quantify the potency of their medication.
According to Ibn al-Nadim, al-Kindi wrote at least two hundred and sixty books, contributing heavily to geometry (thirty-two books), medicine and philosophy (twenty-two books each), logic (nine books), and physics (twelve books).
Al Kindi developed his own ideas on akhlaq (character and ethics). Happiness, he propounded, lay a wise balance between attachment and detachment, between courage and rashness. In his attempts to develop a science of akhlaq, he presaged Nasiruddin al Tusi (d 1274) of Persia by four hundred years.
