General education. It’s important that students with intellectual disabilities be involved in, and make progress in, the general education curriculum. That’s the same curriculum that’s learned by those without disabilities. Be aware that IDEA does not permit a student to be removed from education in age-appropriate general education classrooms solely because he or she needs modifications to be made in the general education curriculum.
</sup>

Supplementary aids and services. Given that intellectual disabilities affect learning, it’s often crucial to provide support to students with ID in the classroom. This includes making accommodations appropriate to the needs of the student. It also includes providing what IDEA calls “supplementary aids and services.” Supplementary aids and services are supports that may include instruction, personnel, equipment, or other accommodations that enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children to the maximum extent appropriate.
</sup>

Thus, for families and teachers alike, it’s important to know what changes and accommodations are helpful to students with intellectual disabilities. These need to be discussed by the IEP team and included in the IEP, if appropriate.
</sup>

Adaptive skills. Many children with intellectual disabilities need help with adaptive skills, which are skills needed to live, work, and play in the community. Teachers and parents can help a child work on these skills at both school and home. Some of these skills include:

communicating with others;

taking care of personal needs (dressing, bathing, going to the bathroom);

health and safety;

home living (helping to set the table, cleaning the house, or cooking dinner);

social skills (manners, knowing the rules of conversation, getting along in a group, playing a game);

reading, writing, and basic math; and

as they get older, skills that will help them in the workplace.

Transition planning. It’s extremely important for families and schools to begin planning early for the student’s transition into the world of adulthood. Because intellectual disability affects how quickly and how well an individual learns new information and skills, the sooner transition planning begins, the more can be accomplished before the student leaves secondary school.

"If you are disabled, it is probably not your fault, but it is no good blaming the world or expecting it to take pity on you. One has to have a positive attitude and must make the best of the situation that one finds oneself in; if one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically disabled as well. In my opinion, one should concentrate on activities in which one's physical disability will not present a serious handicap. I am afraid that Olympic Games for the disabled do not appeal to me, but it is easy for me to say that because I never liked athletics anyway. On the other hand, science is a very good area for disabled people because it goes on mainly in the mind. Of course, most kinds of experimental work are probably ruled out for most such people, but theoretical work is almost ideal. My disabilities have not been a significant handicap in my field, which is theoretical physics. Indeed, they have helped me in a way by shielding me from lecturing and administrative work that I would otherwise have been involved in. I have managed, however, only because of the large amount of help I have received from my wife, children, colleagues and students. I find that people in general are very ready to help, but you should encourage them to feel that their efforts to aid you are worthwhile by doing as well as you possibly can." - Stephen Hawking

— From "Handicapped People and Science," Science Digest 92, No. 9, September 1984

When I was 3 years old, I lost my hearing and was completely deaf. I don't know what caused it to happen, but from the ages 3 until 7 I was deaf and communicated with sign language. I remember my first time at Disneyland when I was 6 years old and being amazed by everything that I saw. The visuals were absolutely spectacular. I also remember the second time I went to Disneyland when I was 8 years old and specifically looking over at my mother and asking her, while watching the parade, "These characters have voices?" I think I cried while riding the "It's a Small World" attraction because it was the first time for me to hear the song. Since the day I got my hearing back, I have cherished every sound I hear, whether it be a bird chirping, waves crashing, or my mother yelling at me. I realize in our busy lives a lot of people tend to neglect the beauty and sounds around us, but I would like to challenge everyone for one day to imagine they could not hear. I think, then, more people won't take for granted the senses we have been gifted with. In fact, I have posted a video of a famous song, using sign language, next to this message. I ask you, for the first time, to watch this video with the sound turned off. Then, if you wish, watch it again, but this time with the sound on. How did you feel the first time watching it? And the second time? I am interested in knowing your thoughts...please feel free to express yourself in comments section of this message. Recently, I have been teaching my students sign language, not because it is part of the curriculum, but rather because I want them to learn the meaning behind why we have sign language and the value of the sounds we are able to hear. - Eric Schmidt, July 15, 2021
