When we speak about climate change the first thing that probably comes to many people’s minds is large scale deforestations and heavy industry emitting polluted clouds. But when we add Greece to the equation things change. Greece is not a heavy industrialized country and its size does not allow massive forests to result in large scale deforestation.

Forest fires have been present in Greece from the ancient times. The last few decades though have been very intense. Two decades before there has been an average of almost 1096 fires per year (Analysis of the causes of forest fires in Greece, Alexandros Dimitrakopoulos, 1995). Apart from the immediate results like burning thousands acres of sometimes endemic flora its effects will last many years after. Habitat loss, Burned flora will force the fauna that survived to move in research for a new suitable habitat that sometimes does not exist or it’s unreachable. Soil degradation that can result to desertification and floods. Air pollution the quality of the air will decrease both from the actual smoke and the loss of fauna the next years.
Some fires also take their toll in not only the environment but to human lives also, for example the previous summer in a fire 30 km away from the center of Athens 100 people died.

Big highways that connect Greece can result in fragmenting habitats.
A very typical is Egnatia. Egnatia is a motorway in Greece that extends from the western port of Igoumenitsa to the eastern Greek–Turkish border at Kipoi and It runs a total of 670 km. As it can be seen in the picture Egnatia goes through Greece’s biggest mountain range Pindos which is one of the two areas in Greece that brown bear is found. Even though action like reinforced high fences and “green bridges” there are still incidents of car crashes with bears.

Egnatia odos and measures taken for the protection of bears
http://www.egnatia.eu/page/default.asp?la=2&id=70&pl=1075&pk=117&ap=1063

Another example of fragmentation of habitats in Greece is arbitary housing inside forests. This can result in human caused disturbances in habitats. Also the roads that are built for these houses can lead to habitat fragmentation

Desertification is a very serious case of habitat degradation. Mainly southern areas like the island of Crete and other islands are affected but potentially all of Greece can be affected by desertification on the years to come.
The main reasons for desertification are extensive agriculture, overexploitation of water resources and the loss of available water resourses.

Another factor that could result in the degradation Greece’s sea and terrain habitat is the upcoming oil drilling activities that are going to happen in many areas around Greece. According to WWF 60,000 square kilometers of sea in the Ionian and Crete and 17,000 square kilometers of land in Epirus, West Sterea Hellas and Western Peloponnese have already been granted to foreign and Greek oil companies for exploration and extraction of oil and natural gas.

In many areas all around Greece one of the most common examples of overexploitation is the illegal medicinal herb gathering. Since I was a very young child my grandmother making tea for me with herbs that she was telling me she gathered herself. When I grew up and I joined my grandmother in the gathering of herbs she told me about the “ethics” or sustainability methods of it. We should never uproot the plant just cut it with the knife and only after the blooming time of the year. The last few years during spring or summer you can always see in the news articles about illegal herb gathering in massive quantities all around Greece.
The law about herb gathering is not allowed inside Natura 2000 areas. Apart from that every forest agency issues its own rules depending on the area. Outside the protected areas it is allowed to gather herbs without a permit only for personal use “common” plants like origanum vulgaris (in some areas personal use is defined in 2 kg). A permit can be issued to gather for commercial use but the amount is specified depending on the abundance. For herbs that are protected like origanum dictamus gathering is completely banned.
